No MSG No Garlic FoodieNo MSG No Garlic Foodie
I first encountered Kokomo during a Google search for a vegan restaurant in Kits. I had identified a couple of menu items that I can enjoy. When I got there, I asked them to identify which menu items do not contain garlic. The answer was: all the savoury items contain garlic one way or another. I was told that the almond noodles had the least. Since broccoli was listed as one of the ingredients, I thought it would be pretty healthy. Instead, I got a singular broccoli floret in my bowl, the rest was noodles with a garlicky sauce – it was quite disgusting to my taste bud, and for a while there, I thought my tummy was going to riot as well. Another day, while getting a green smoothie at Juice Truck, I realized where I had seen the Kokomo brand before. Kokomo supplies ready to go salad bowls to Juice Truck and other retail outlets. So now, I know that even though the labels on the bowls do not always mention garlic, the salad bowls are not safe for me eat because they all contain garlic. Sigh. The Daily Dozen in the "How Not to Die" book by Dr. McGregor mentioned over 30 herbs and spices that are good for health, and garlic is just one of them. That's more than 33 flavours that can make individual bowls very different and tasty with a huge VARIETY of flavours. And yet, we're stuck with garlic being the dominant taste from this outlet. How unimaginative! On the day I was there, the inside of the restaurant was packed with boxes of stuff like a storage room. We had to sit outside under the sun.

I have to say, one of the most delicious restaurants I have tried in Vancouver! I tried it on a whim as there was a promo on the food delivery apps, and am so glad I tried! I got the Coastal Macro bowl, the Turmeric Laksa bowl, and the Kokomo Açai bowl. To be honest I expected the macro to be my fave based on reviews but the Laksa absolutely blew me away! Absolutely flavourful, hearty, full of fresh ingredients. Probably the tastiest thing I’ve eaten in a month lol! The Macro was also good, but the Laksa was amazing. The Açai bowl I’m still working on and to be honest I had only added it as an add-on to make the minimum order amount for the delivery app promo (lol) but similarly I am very impressed with the freshness of ingredients and great taste. My only suggestion is that the portion sizes (especially on Laksa) seem kind of small—the takeout container photo is from when it arrived and you can see that it is filled below the half way line, especially compared to how full the macro bowl looks :( I am not sure if they maybe accidentally gave me a half portion instead? However, even with the smaller than expected proportion, I still rate the order 5/5 stars because the taste and freshness was fantastic, and the order arrived super quick (I made sure to tip the delivery driver extra). Delicious food, unique flavour, and one of few plant based options that don’t feel too oily or fried or processed. Highly recommend, even for people who don’t normally eat plant based!

Love the food and vibe here. My usual location is the one in East Van but I stopped here a few times recently and the food delivered the same big flavour and the staff was also very welcoming. I love how their food combines the flavours of comfort food with healthy wholesome ingredients. They carry baked goods from TurF, many of which also offer a slightly healthier take on traditional baked goods without comprising flavour. And everything is vegan! Pretty small inside, but I really like the vibe. Somehow it kind of reminds me of a camper, maybe it’s the shape… If that’s not your thing there’s a patio area outside with picnic tables which is also great for soaking in good weather when it’s nice out.
