Hoo boy. It pains me to give such a low rating. Story below.
The Good: AMAZING brussel sprouts, seriously, they are magic Great energy from the host despite setbacks. However, no apologies were made for the abysmal service. The servers that arrived at 5:30 were great - sadly this was over two hours into our meal...
The Bad: 3 hours from sit down to leaving. Reservations were made a week in advance for a party of 8. Server did not know the one beer on tap, specials, put drinks on the wrong bills, and was generally unattentive. We were told it'd be 30min before we could order as the kitchen was behind. It was 55min before orders were taken. Food was delivered 1hr05min after orders were taken. Due to errors by the server, drinks were basically randomly put on different bills. 25min and 4 bill re-prints to sort out errors The restaurant was not busy - two other patrons at time of seating, eight when food was delivered.
I get it - no one wants to work on a holiday. In the words of the host, "this is a disaster". I get the distinct feeling that he was overworked and was doing several additional jobs. At one point he ran out to buy bread and fruit.
The server was clearly inexperienced - she had to check with other staff on basic questions and messed up drink orders to the point where other servers thought we had moved around (we hadn't).
The end result: 30min expected delay, another 30min to order, an hour for food, and another 25min to sort out mistakes on the bill. We ate in 35min.
The food was mediocre - soggy fries, dry wings, soggy burger bread, over-kneaded unseasoned rubbery burger meat. We only smelled cooking about 30min after ordering, at which point a lone chef was spotted working the stations, so the poor thing was probably rushed as well.
It wasn't all bad. The brussel sprouts made me smile for the first and only time that night. I honestly thought the host was trying his best. I would have appreciated him simply turning us away given the state of the restaurant, or at least apologizing for a job poorly done.
Here's hoping this was a...
Read moreAn establishment I have long been wanting to visit for awhile now due to the serving of wild boar. I could say I highly enjoyed the experience. I came in during brunch hour with a good friend and we shared a french toast and locus skillet with pulled wild boar. I also ordered a peach and banana smoothie on the side as a drink accompaniment. The skillet was a good blend of protein and greens making it feel “healthy” for what you are eating. The egg was cooked as requested (over-medium) with a nice golden yolk. The wild boar unsurprisingly is on the gamier ends of meats in general but mixing the egg and greens with one bit blends the gaminess of the wild boar meat into a rich and delectable unique taste completely masking the gamey taste of the meat. Although, the price is on the higher end for the quantity received. The highlight of our dining experience was the French toast. The D’Anjou pear had just the right amount of sweetness combined with the salty yet sweet flavour of the vanilla cream cheese drizzle to create a dish that was rich and luxurious to the palate. The candied walnuts also added a nice crunch and alternate texture to the soft interior of the French toast. The texture of the French toast I would describe as a whole wheat brioche, soft but having the slight grainy texture of whole wheat bread. Compared to French toasts with berry accompaniments, the D’Anjou pear created a sweetness which did not overpower the dish as strongly. Overall, the experience was very pleasant and I could see myself coming back to try their dinner service. The service was good without any fuss and the atmosphere was cozy and warm. The atmosphere in my opinion gives off the vibe of a good place to catch up with close friends or acquaintances and see how things are going in their lives. I would recommend giving this restaurant a try and opening up one’s palate to new...
Read moreThis place is an institution on main street and for good reason. The decor is wonderful, the service is fantastic, and they produce some of the best most interesting food i've seen in recent memory. You can go for the classic, delicious, cooked-to-perfection breakfast (main street eggs is my favorite) or venture off into the lunch and dinner menus for some well thought out, delicious dishes. I love how the breakfast menu is more traditional whereas the dinner and lunch menu tends to put a more creative (and unique) twist on things. Both are so good you really can't go wrong. Besides the wonderful food, the place is cool. Going to Locus is an experience. It's not just going to a restaurant; this place makes you want to hang out, enjoy your time there, and stay a while. The welcoming staff only increase this feeling.
If I had one complaint, it would be that the food does takes a while to arrive. However, to me personally, I don't see it as a bad thing. The food is always excellent and they put time and care into every dish so of course it's not lightining fast; it shows they care. Besides that, it adds to the atmosphere. Enjoy your time at the Locus. Relax, talk, have some coffee (or a drink), enjoy the amazing decor, or, if outside, the beautiful view of main street. Eat some of the delicious cinammon raison bread with rum and chipotle butter to whet your appetite. When the food comes, you will not be dissapointed, and the end result is an amazing experience.
I tell all of my friends to come here if they're looking for new, unique, amazing food, or just a wonderful place for a sunday brunch, or even a cool place to have some food and hang out. It's classy enough to take your parents to but the goth decor will appeal to your girlfriend as well. I totally reccomend this place and will continue to be a...
