What a gem of a place! I'm not going to write a review saying "it's great for the price or so good for a small place." This place is good, period.

I have recently moved to Point Grey and have been trying to find my new sushi place. I have been to the Eatery and Green Leaf which are both great. But I think Nishi Sushi is a lot better in quality and service.

I was craving sushi and stumbled upon this place tonight. They were about to close but they said I could order take out. So I ordered 3 rolls; tuna, salmon tataki, and dragon. All three tasted delicious.

While waiting they offered a nigiri for me to try. It was the best seared salmon nigiri I've ever had.

There is so much care put into their food and service. Upon opening the take out box, you see how well and beautifully it's organized. Napkin, chopsticks, and the soy sauce is bundled up together very nicely. These little details show how much they care.

I think I've found my new sushi place and the value I get is an...

Disappointing Experience – Not as Advertised

I was really looking forward to trying this sushi place, but my experience was disappointing. The images on their website were completely misleading—what I received looked nothing like what was advertised. The avocado mango roll I ordered was the size of a maki roll, not the larger roll I expected.

In top of that, it is very expensive for what it is. The menu also lacked clear descriptions. Nowhere did it mention that the gyoza were deep-fried, and they ended up being way too oily. If I had known, I would have ordered something else.

They should show pictures that are accurate to what they actually serve. Overall, the food did not match the quality or portions shown online. I wouldn’t recommend this place unless they improve their transparency and food...

Negative: 3 of my 4 visits since the ownership change were quite disappointing. The white sushi rice was way overcooked 3/4 visits (they got it right once). The brown sushi rice, which I ordered once, was the worst I've had: overcooked and carried a strange flavour. On the two most recent visits, the California Roll had an unusually strong, fishy aftertaste that I've not experienced before. The salmon sashimi seemed very off on one occasion.

Positive: I like their Korean-style spicy sushi and their sauces in general. The new staff are very friendly and I do sincerely hope that they succeed. More consistency on rice quality/preparation and fish quality would go a long way to...

The best salmon nigiri ever! Salmon and rice were harmonious in my mouth and I love how nigiri was served on wood plate. And vegetable tempura was way over my expectation. Obviously, the oil used for deep-frying was super fresh, and I love the crispy batter. The size of each tempura was so big. Mango blueberry roll was sweet, so it would be great for kids. And I love the size of Dynamite roll. Next time I would like to try other cuisines of this restaurant. I am glad to find such a hidden gem in this neighborhood.

Highly recommend their nishi roll. I asked for no mayo, the roll came in 10 large pieces, packed with salmon, tuna, scallops, avocado, yam and crab. The amount of crab is just right (unlike a lot of other sushi places where the roll is 90% crab) and didn’t taste overly ‘mayonnaised’. The yam roll was huge and crunchy, but a lil oily to my taste tho. All these under $20 and I wasn’t able to finish everything. Definitely a gem and will visit again!!
