We were searching for a place along Kingsway to have dinner and ended up at at Sabor Mexicano.
Horchata Rajas con crema poblano pepper Huaraches Chicken Burrito Chile Relleno Baked
The food wasn't bad but given the high ratings for this place, it was a bit of a disappointment. We've had much tastier Mexican food than what we had here.
Huarache was an item I hadn't seen before so I decided to give it a try. It was basically like a piece of flatbread with toppings on it. I feel like it could have been more flavorful, The avocado was smashed up and served in a small container as a dip. I would have appreciated a larger serving of avocado, and I wasn't so crazy about it being a dip. I think a large serving of it right on top of the Huarache itself might have been more enjoyable.
My husband's chicken Burrito looked massive and very impressive at first but he said that it was just OK.
Chile Relleno Baked was a bit of a confusing dish for our daughter. Never having seen or ordered this dish before, she wasn't entirely certain how to eat it. It came with several small tortilla wraps so it kind of looked like maybe she was supposed to put the stuff on her plate into the tortilla wraps and eat them as tacos.
I had read their menu online before coming to the restaurant and was hoping to order a Nopales salad (cactus). However, when I got to the restaurant I didn't see the Nopales salad on the menu that was handed to us. When I inquired about it, I was told that it was a seasonal item. (sigh) It always annoys me when restaurants don't update their websites to reflect their current menu offerings. I read the menu, find something I'd like to order and get so disappointed when I come to the restaurant and find out that the item I had wanted isn't being offered.
The Horchata drinks were probably the best part...
Read moreI was very excited to try this place after scrolling through the photos - it all looks good! However, I'd say after eating here 95% of the photos seem to be stock photos and not of the actual food served at the restaurant. My husband ordered the lamb (barbacoa) tacos because the server said "return customers come because of the way we prepare our meats. Barbacoa I suppose to be juicy and tender from the long cooking process and full of flavor, alas the tacos were dry leading a jerky-like chewing and bland which there glob of salsa on table could not fix. I ordered the pozole based on the images (yelp) and the server's comment. I've had pozole my entire life because well I'm Mexican and we make and we eat it a lot and it doesn't look or taste like what they served. It seems to me like they used the broth from the barbacoa to make it because it hand a very strong lamb/goat flavor instead of hearty/fatty pork and guajillo and ancho chile broth. Lastly we ordered the kids quesadilla and it was left behind because it was all dry, tortilla, cheese and shredded chicken. Needless to say I do not...
Read moreSabor serves a variety of Mexican dishes ranging from Gordita’s, burritos, tacos and soups. There were bottled drinks and desserts as well. We tried the beef burrito with red sauce and the chicken enchilada with green sauce. The the red sauce is milder than the green sauce.
Combined with the cheese on the enchilada, the green sauce created a nice flavour for the chicken enchilada. Portion sizes were generous.
Service: Server was friendly and efficient managing the front of the house with take out orders and dine in guest.
Seating: The restaurant has seating along the wall opposite the kitchen area for about 12 people. There are a number of television monitors mounted throughout the space - could be entertaining during a game night.
