We recently visited Sahel on West Broadway, and it was such a delightful experience! Sahel is a unique spot combining a small grocery market and a full restaurant where you can explore the flavours of Persian cuisine. While waiting for your food, you can browse their selection of Persian groceries at the back of the store or check out their ready-to-eat items near the checkout counter, which almost feels like an open kitchen. During our visit, we tried: ✨ Persian Dolmeh دلمه: We absolutely loved pairing the tangy grape leaves stuffed with rice and herbs with yogurt. It’s the perfect appetizer to kick off your meal. Highly recommend! 🥙 Hummus هوموس: Served with flatbread, this creamy and flavorful hummus is a must-have. Perfect for sharing and simply delicious! 🍢 Special Sahel BBQ Platter: If you’re a meat lover, this dish is for you. The platter is loaded with juicy kebabs — minced meat, boneless chicken, beef, and lamb chops — served with basmati rice and grilled tomatoes. It’s Persian BBQ at its finest and truly exceptional! One thing to note is that Persian food is distinct from Mediterranean cuisine, so if you haven’t tried Persian food before, Sahel is a great place to start. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the staff is incredibly nice. While English might not be their first language, they make every effort to explain the dishes and make you feel welcome and comfortable. Sahel is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and looking to try something new and delicious! 📝📝 Food: 🍢🍢🍢🍢🍢 Must Try! Service: 👩🍳👩🍳👩🍳👩🍳 Kids: 👶👶👶👶 Yay! Price: 💲💲 $40-$50 each person (dinner) Presentation: 📷📷📷 Parking: Metered parking in front and free parking in the neighbourhood. Tips: 📝 Perfect for sharing; generous portions, especially the platter. 📝 Light, fluffy rice pairs well with any dish. 📝 Open 10 AM - 10 PM; convenient for UBC students. 📝 Get 20% off $15+ online orders—check their website for details! Poor service but food is decent. Came here Feb 2022. I called a day prior to make a reservation but was told none was needed as they wouldn't be busy. When I arrived, I was told there they were fully booked despite having only 2 tables filled. The server begrudgingly gave us a table after repeating that I was told I didn't need a reservation. He also stated we would have to "eat quickly" which I assume was because there were bookings made. The place was never full during the entire time we were there which was about 1.5 hours from being seated and no one was waiting for a table so idk what that server was going on about. We ordered 4 items including the bbq platter, kobideh with rice, eggplant dip and dolmades. Food was tasty and presentation was nice. The bbq platter can serve enough for about 3 males or about 4 females. The koobideh was very good, tender and flavourful. All the meats were well marinated. They got our order wrong and brought us a lamb platter which we never ordered. The waitress seemed dumbfounded but we eventually got the koobideh after a bit of a wait. But we only got the meat skewers and no rice. When I asked if there was rice with this, the server said "yes, did you want it?" I was flabbergasted. Of course I want it; it comes with the meal. It's like ordering a prime rib dinner at the Keg and they just bring you the prime rib, no sides. We also asked for hot water on 3 occasions and they did not bring it to us until halfway thru our meal. They also brought 1 glass of hot water despite several of us wanting it. At one point , the server said they were boiling it still. What kind of restaurant doesn't have hot water on the ready??Service was really non existent. You had to ask them for everything. Overall food was tasty but I would definitely just do take out instead of dine in. The star rating mainly reflects the service. They also don't check for proof of vaccination if that matters to you.

I was once a loyal customer of this restaurant, but my recent experiences have been deeply disappointing. I’ve placed online orders a few times now, and the quality of the food has drastically declined. Most recently, I ordered Gheymeh, a dish I’ve enjoyed here before. However, this time, it was far from the authentic recipe I expected. Traditionally, Gheymeh is a flavorful stew made with beef, beef broth, split peas, and French fries. Unfortunately, what I received was unrecognizable—a bland, poorly executed version. The dish lacked the essential components: there was barely any beef, no beef broth, and no French fries. Instead, it was overloaded with split peas and included a single, unseasoned boiled potato. The flavor was completely absent, and the dish felt like a cheap imitation of what it should have been. Also There were no side dishes or any other thing which usually when you order from a restaurant it comes with it. I truly hope the restaurant addresses these issues, as it’s disheartening to see such a decline in quality. For now, I cannot recommend ordering from here, especially if you’re expecting the authentic flavors and standards they once delivered.

Amazing! I have been going there for a long time but I never had the chance to post a review until now: - food is always always always fresh. It's cooked, prepped and all done right there at the front infront of your eyes. - the place is always busy...busy is good, and obviously for a good reason. - food is authentic. I am middle eastern and I would not go there if it was not authentic, fresh or clean. - the place is clean. - staff are super friendly, always smiling, greet people, great service, and they give lots of food. - prices are great compared to other places and considering the quality and quantity of food that you get and the amazing service. Many other places are not even half decent. - nice big variety of a menu...all authentic. - they have a restaurant section and it's great. It's never empty. - they sell other great things too, from sweets to middle eastern stuff...check it out while you are there. - the food is yummy. You can smell all the goodness when you first walk in through the front door, it looks great and it tastes amazing. Thank you so much to all the staff at Sahel for everything that you do, for the great food, and for the amazing service.

I recently visited Sahel Restaurant on Broadway with a group of friends, and we had a fantastic dining experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed evening out. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the chicken kebab, beef kebab, and several appetizers. The chicken kebab was tender and flavorful, while the beef kebab was perfectly cooked, juicy, and seasoned to perfection. Among the appetizers, the grape leaf wrap stood out with its fresh and tangy taste. I also tried their traditional yogurt drink, which was refreshingly good. The portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable, making it a great value for the quality and quantity of food we received. The service was excellent, with the staff being attentive and friendly, enhancing our overall experience. In summary, Sahel Restaurant offers a delightful blend of delicious food, great service, and a pleasant atmosphere. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a satisfying meal with friends or family. Whether you’re a fan of kebabs or curious about trying new appetizers, this restaurant won’t disappoint.

Disappointing Food Quality and a Serious Health Concern! I ordered Zereshk Polo with Chicken from Sahel Restaurant. I’ve been a customer in the past, and while the food wasn’t amazing, it was decent enough. But this time, things took a turn for the worse. 1. Food Quality and Taste: The food was a huge letdown. The rice was low-quality, and the chicken stew tasted off—nothing about the meal was enjoyable. 2. The Bigger Issue: After we finished eating, we noticed some of the chicken stew had spilled on our wooden dining table, leaving a bright yellow stain. We tried everything—water, dish soap, glass cleaner, even bleach—but nothing worked. It made me wonder: if this stain won’t come off wood, what could it be doing to our bodies? This doesn’t feel safe at all. My Concern: I suspect they’re using industrial dyes, because no regular food coloring behaves like this. If that’s true, it’s a serious health risk, and I think people deserve to know. Recommendation: If you care about your health and your family’s well-being, I’d strongly recommend avoiding this place.
