Sushi Sei! A new restaurant that opened recently. It’s my second time visiting and I wanted to share my experiences.
The owners took over the fish grain noodle spot and kept most of the decor and built a new kitchenette. Owners are friendly and give away samples of free food (miso soup and salmon nigiri) for customers to try. Don’t expect this all the time though!
Tonight, I tried the yaki and don items. The beef teriyaki udon was flavourful and pleasant slurping experience. The sauce tasted like the Japanese bulldog bbq sauce which brought back good memories. The pickled ginger added a nice crunch and sour flavour. 10/10
The tonkatsu with demiglace was also decent. The demi glace was cold when it arrived but that’s because lots of people came through the door so they can’t control that. The macaroni salad was amazing!!! Very tasty and IMO better than Hawaiian Mac salad. The tonkatsu had a nice bite but was a bit dry. Overall a 6/10.
My partner took the Sakura don for leftovers but I had a couple bites. Similar taste to the tonkatsu but with mayo and demiglace sauce all over. Nothing super special. Chicken was better than pork though but still dry. 6/10.
I mentioned before the owners gave us sample nigiri’s. I didn’t post pics of it because we ate it so quickly. It was very good! It was salmon aburi nigiri’s. nice big piece of fatty salmon with a jalepeno garnish. I believe it’s on there menu.
I really like the earth ware plates and bowls. It has a nice aesthetic and matches the theme of the restaurant. Overall, I enjoyed my dining experience and would...
Read moreVisited the newish Sushi Sei located on Kingsway last month. It's in the former Grains Fish Noodle location with a fairly bright interior with seating separated between the front and the back.
Tried the Assorted Tempura ($17.5) which is a larger version (10pc) of the appetizer tempura. The pieces were crisp but I think the batter was a bit too thick in my opinion.
The Spicy Agadashi Tofu ($8.5) was not bad and we liked the flavourful spicy sauce.
For sushi items, we ordered the Spicy Negihama Roll ($9.95) which had big pieces of yellowtail inside. The roll wasn't spicy at all and I'm not sure if they forgot the spicy sauce but i think I actually prefer this non-spicy variety.
The Rainbow Roll ($18.5) had red crab on the inside and was topped with 5 kinds of fish. The only thing I didn't like was that the nori inside was s bit chewy.
The Chicken Yakisoba ($17.9) was ok but I miss having it served on a sizzling grill. The noodles seemed to be missing a caramelization on the noodles that would have brought it up a notch.
Finally, the Gomae ($6.95) was the last to be delivered to our table. I actually didn't pay attention to the menu so I was surprised this was actually made of broccoli and asparagus instead of spinach. The dish seemed to be a bit warm and I miss having a chilled spinach gomae.
Overall, the food wasn't bad. The sushi rolls could be rolled a bit tighter as they fell...
Read moreHigh quality sashimi at a reasonable price and quantity - I can find that combination in Japan where I visit often, but not anymore in Vancouver (and yes I have been to the popular ones). My expectations were low, especially for this new neighborhood restaurant with a menu and online presence that could use some more marketing love.
When the food came, it spoke for itself and cut through any marketing noise. I am ecstatic about this unexpected gem and probably my fav in this town now. When I spoke to the server afterwards about the unexpected quality of the sashimi, she casually mentioned it's brought in from Japan. Love how they don't scream this on their walls and menus while charging you double the price with half the portion like all the Downtown, Richmond trending restaurants. The food speaks for itself.
Also want to mention the servers were especially kind and attentive, genuinely making sure we...
