I don't write reviews often, but this place has earned one. In the past two and a half months I've eaten here 6 times now, and I've been consistently impressed. I've had 4 food items off their menu as well as their coffee: salmon benny, pork belly benny, chicken and waffles, and double blueberry pancakes. For the bennies I only ate them with the hollandaise sauce though they do also offer a cheddar sauce, which is probably a good sauce too but I can't speak on that.
The benny's are served on an English muffin. The salmon version which is what I had today is served with fresh avocado as well as some baby lettuce, wild smoked sockeye, hollandaise sauce and finished on top with some green onion. The side is a nice portion of fried baby potatoes seasoned with lemon and truffle. Every aspect of this dish is amazing, eggs are always perfectly cooked. The sauce looks and tastes amazing. It has this two tone marble look of yellow and white, not sure how they do that exactly but it looks rather nice, and the flavor... oh my! Just the perfect silky smooth sauce, with just the right amount of saltiness and creaminess and thickness, what every hollandaise should aspire to be! The pork belly is crispy exterior and tender and juicy inside, very satisfying. The potatoes are fantastic, they really elevate such a simple thing to something I consider classy. Even the ketchup they serve there seems special, reminds me of the low sugar ketchup I buy for myself that is sweetened with dates rather than sugar. Not sure if that's what they use, never bothered to ask but it wouldn't surprise me.
Apparently everything here is organic, I have not confirmed that as its just what my friend told me but I'm inclined to believe it, the ingredient quality is certainly quite high. I know they cure their smoked salmon in house as well.
10/10 benny, I think I've finally found the best benny in Vancouver, this is it. And I've had many. I've spent about 35 years living in this city, and I've gone to just about everywhere. There are other decent places too no doubt, but overall I gotta give this place number one.
The chicken and waffles, are as good as the bennies, possibly better depending on what you prefer. Boneless crispy chicken on an amazing Belgian waffle, topped with their signature poached egg and comes with syrup and gravy, garnished with some chopped jalapeno. I was never really sold on the concept of chicken and waffles in the past, I believe it's a southern thing and I'm not southern, but these people made me a believer!
The double blue berry pancakes are truely a decadent dessert. Well for me it's a dessert, for others perhaps that's their meal. Fluffy pancakes loaded with whole blue berries and comes with whipped cream, warm freshly made blue berry sauce which resembles a sort of a compote, and maple syrup.
Portions in general are between adequate and generous depending on your stomach size I guess. I'm well over 200 pounds and well over 6 feet tall and male and a serving is generally satisfactory for me, plus a drink. When I order the benny with a friend I also tend to split an order of the pancakes as well and we are able to finish, though just barely.
This isn't the cheapest place, nor should it be. In general I would say it's about what you'd expect in price for Vancouver, for a good place. And it's worth the price they ask for sure.
I plan to come back again and again. I look forward to eventually trying other items such as the donuts on their dessert menu one day
They have 2 locations, I've only gone to the e Hastings one. No complaints regarding the service, seems good to me and they were sufficiently attentive.
I recommend wait listing on their website. Wait times on the weekends recently are about 45 minutes give or take, when I go...
Read moreI waited a couple of hours before writing this, and was still very upset and I also read some other reviews from different people and it seems my friend and I experienced similar things. I usually come to the Cambie location and never have any problems but I had such a strange experience at the Hastings location. Arrived at this location at 11:56am, got seated around 12:20pm. The hostess and the person making the beverages at the front were super kind and friendly! Once seated we were promptly given the menu by the friendly hostess, then a male server came over and brought us water and gave us a couple minutes to order. He took our drink order first, and then said he would come back to take our food order. He never came back, another server came with our drinks shortly after and took our order. Everything so far is great! We ordered at around 12:30, we thought since it was busy the wait for the food was understandable, but we started to notice patrons who were seated and ordered AFTER us were given their food BEFORE us! We asked a different server and she said she would go ask the kitchen, came back and said our orders were coming in 2 minutes. If we never asked would our orders really come out in 2 minutes? The food came out at around 1:13pm. We ordered the buttermilk chicken and waffles benny and salmon benny- made into a bowl with a side of truffle potatoes. We aren’t sure since the salmon Bennie was made into a bowl if that made a difference but the menu says ALL Bennies include the herb tomato and the side of fruit. Buttermilk chicken did not have the tomato, and the side of truffle potatoes also didn’t come out until we asked for them. We didn’t want to risk another wait time if we had asked for the tomato or fruit, so we opted not to. Not sure if this was because we got our food right after we asked so maybe the kitchen just forgot something in haste but we noticed the truffle lemon potatoes didn’t taste as they did before. Instead of truffle lemon potatoes it tasted like we just got potatoes. Furthermore, not sure this is just a thing with making the Bennie’s into a bowl but considerably less salmon in the bowl than when I usually get it the regular muffin way. It was more of potato with a side of salmon. While waiting for our order no one had asked or noticed we were waiting for a considerably long amount of time. Yet we did see servers ask OTHER tables if they were alright or if their food was good. Very interesting observation. We also had initially ordered a 3 piece beignet order but we just wanted to leave after finishing our meal so we asked to cancel the beignets with the first male server. We paid and for the first time I didn’t include a tip, usually even if the service was bad I at least tip 10% but since it was only bad service SPECIFICALLY to ONLY our table of 2, it seems reasonable to me. This experience was really terrible. 3 stars for food as it came without some things (not sure if this was wrong or not but was already upset about the long wait time so the lack of things additionally dampened things) and the lack of truffle and lemon flavour from the potatoes and noticeable small salmon portion. 1 star for service because all of the above, the hostess and person at the front making drinks were lovely, to be fair the servers were nice as well? Just weren’t aware of us? Felt like they were ignoring us and only came over when we asked for help? 1 star for atmosphere because you start to hate it after seeing people get their food before you when you ordered before them. I really hope this was a one time thing, very...
Read moreUsually a reasonably good, if claustrophobically crowded experience. Staff is usually friendly, food is excellent. So I have mixed feelings about posting this. My boyfriend and I had planned to get a nice takeout brunch for a treat. Unfortunately last night was really rough in ways I won't get into so we were sleep deprived and looking forward to food even more. I placed a takeout order through the website (emailed receipt marked 12:24). The website gave us a window of 12:50-1:00 for pickup. My boyfriend left at around 12:40 to go pick up our food. He got back at around 1:45 visibly upset. He told me he arrived right as the window for pickup started and as he tried to enter the building was verbally accosted by other patrons telling him to wait in line to get seats. They would not listen as he tried to explain he was there for takeout and eventually he had to simply push past them. Inside, staff took his payment at around 12:50-12:55 and then proceeded to leave him standing there in the entryway for 45 minutes until he finally got our food after 1:30, more than half an hour after the estimated window for pickup. I get that it's an estimation, but he received no communication and no acknowledgement for 45 minutes and we got the food more than 40 minutes after the time stated. 5-10 minutes I could understand, even 15, but 45 is unprofessional and unacceptable, especially considering no effort was made to communicate with him about the order. I have worked in the restaurant industry so I have no qualms speaking to issues in service. I also suspect the food wasn't brought out to him when it was done, though I can't prove it at all. The food was completely stone cold when we ate it even though we live close enough to the restaurant to have enjoyed hot takeout before.
We usually have a good experience here, but today was...
