Infection Control Compliance at Starbucks
Today at approximately 8 PM, an incident occurred at this Starbucks involving a potential breach of hygiene and infection control standards by a staff member. An employee (Asian Filipino looking girl) was observed sweeping the floor and subsequently taking orders the. handling beverage cups without washing her hands. When I raised a concern to another staff member, Persian girl, about the cleanliness of the cups, the first employee proceeded to handle additional cups without sanitizing her hands, despite the expressed concerns. The Asian employee mentioned she only touched the outside and I replied “well I’m going to be touching that area now with my hands when you touched that dirty broom and it’s on my cup now.” I work for public health and this breach will be reported. Violation of Food Safety and Hygiene Standards: -According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and local public health regulations, all food service establishments must adhere to strict hygiene practices. Employees handling food or drink items are required to wash their hands thoroughly after engaging in tasks that involve contact with contaminated surfaces, such as sweeping floors. -The observed behavior may constitute a violation of: -Section 32 of the Food Premises Regulation (O. Reg. 493/17) under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA) in Ontario, which mandates that employees must wash their hands before handling food, drink, or utensils. -Failure to comply with these regulations can result in warnings, fines, or even temporary closure of the premises by public health authorities.
Also 2. Infection Control Compliance: -The handling of beverage cups without handwashing after sweeping can pose a risk of contamination and potentially expose customers to harmful pathogens.
And 3. Negligence and Duty of Care: -Food service establishments have a legal duty of care to ensure that all items served are safe and free from contamination. -The failure of the employee to wash hands and the subsequent handling of cups, despite the customer’s expressed concerns, could be interpreted as a breach of this...
Read moreMy first Starbucks in 2 months! It was mainly because this location was closed as a result of COVID-19 and it's lack of a drive thru meaning it had to shut its doors for the time being. On today's walk around the neighborhood, I noticed a bunch of paper signs on the windows around the store so I wanted to see what's up. The signs read "stand here please" and I faintly saw people (all baristas) inside the shop. Going to their main side door, I noticed a bunch of people were lining up - it's open! My guess is that they re-opened sometime this week. I mobile ordered my drink (assuming that's the only way) and waited with the others (everyone was sorted of in the same small area, so physical distancing wasn't optimal, I decided to wait a little further).
While waiting, the barista called out, "anyone waiting to place an order?" meaning mobile ordering isn't the sole method but I don't recommend it since you don't know how much longer you'll be waiting (unless you approach the door and ask to order, but the door is quite traffic busy already with people trying to pick up their stuff and paying would be a hassle too).
Tbh, the wait is longer than usual - the baristas take their time to make the orders (so no excuse for mistakes) and you can visually see extra sanitization being implemented. The barista calls your name, you open the door and there is a temporary counter set up where they place your drink down on a tray for you to pick up as they step back. After you do, they wipe down the tray and counter with sanitizer water. All staff were wearing masks and the one that stays at the door to pass out drinks wears gloves as well.
The usual Starbucks mannerism was still in place as I was thanked for my business with a smile.
My only criticism is that I witnessed them accepting cash as payment - many other places are accepting debit and credit only, so I was surprised to see this.
Ultimately, my beverage was made perfect and tasted so good!
