This is a decent Japanese AYCE that has mediocre food, service, and atmosphere; but it is fully self aware and doesn't pretend to be better. So if you are seeking to satisfy a craving or to get a good quantity/acceptable quality meal, this place is fine. If you want more details, read on.
I personally will not be going back, because I found the price point ($15-$18 lunch, $22-$27 dinner) to be too high for what I was paying for.
I am 95% confident that very few items are fresh. I can't claim it with 100% certainty, but I was born in an oriental country, and have ate oriental food all my life. This means I am acquainted with fresh homemade versions and with frozen supermarket versions of the same food.
The miso soup is boiling hot, and the seaweed sinks to the bottom - both are indicative of the soup being made from powder and overcooked. The sushi rice will crumble as soon as you pick it up. The ground meat in the shao mai are solid clumps. The deep fried tofu is far more soggy than crispy. The regular mayo looks yellow, and the spicy mayo isn't spicy. And so on.
That said, I don't have any health concerns with the food. I'm sure the chefs are told to cut corners, but I'm not worried about getting sick - it's not bad, just not great.
The service is as to be expected from such a restaurant. All the employees are young Asian people, and they all speak very little English. They all do the minimum amount of work, and have a tendency to chat together in their native language (Mandarin at this establishment). This is not their fault, if management accepts this kind of behaviour from them. It's pretty standard in this level of restaurant.
But just know not to expect much on the service front.
If the details don't bother you, this place will be just fine for your next night out. If you're seeking more, I recommend that you...
Read moreI've been a regular at Story Sushi (formerly Hockey Sushi) for over 15 years now, and the quality of the food is quite good.
They have good Covid19 protocols and I feel safe when going in to pick up my order. That being said my last two experiences have been less than ideal.
Last week I placed a pick-up order using their website, which states that food will be ready for pickup in approx. 15 minutes. I ordered a Maki Tray, and when I arrived for my order (25 minutes after ordering) the person working cash informed me it wasn't ready yet. When I asked how long it will be, she told me "a minimum of 40 minutes more". I told her that's far too long to wait, and that I placed my order over 25 minutes ago. She then said "we are busy, if you don't like it, you can cancel your order". I did cancel my order and assumed the person was jist having a bad day.
Well tonight I ordered again, and when I arrived to pickup my order, the same thing happened. It was the same person working at the counter, and the exact same conversation. I calmly told her that I understand they are busy, and these are extenuating circumstances with Covid, but the website says 15 minutes. If that's not the case they should take it off their website. Again she told me if I don't like it, I can cancel the order. I didn't cancel, and upon paying realized she overcharged me $10. I told her she punched it in wrong and she rolled her eyes and gave me the $10 back. When I told her I'll come back shortly for the order she replied with "yep".
Overall I find the customer service level these past too visits to be abhorrent, and I will likely be ordering from one of the 4 other sushi restaurants in the area next time. Very...
Read moreFood is okay at best... But service was terrible! Their restaurant etiquettes was egregious! A friend and I visited the place on Sunday night at 830pm. They said they close at 9pm (later found out they close at 930). I didn't want AYCE but my friend did. They told us that we should have enough time to order and eat. Around 915, the food stop coming and started to bother us about our order. Kept telling us that we would have to pay extra. Realizing that we did order alot(thinking we can only put in one order), we took some items out. Then, they started to harassing us by standing right behind our table and start talking loud Cantonese. My friend was so uncomfortable she couldn't eat. By 920, they brought the bill to pay in middle of our meal(which my friend did). By 925, they kept telling us that they are closing, few more times. We still had food left on our table, which we could have finished if we had more time. By 930, I felt discouraged to stay and finish the food, so I ask them if its okay to take it home (instead of throwing away). The waitress literally said pay $5 each/person. My friend paid 18% tip on our bill and still ask for $5 for food they were gonna throw away! I have been to many AYCE and few times when it was less than hour to order and eat. This never ever has happened in my life til now. People should avoid this place like a plague!
I writing this review after 2 weeks and I'm still ticked off. The Story of this...
