My review from a single visit in September 2019 - below.
Last season, I rated this place a 5 stars. However, this season was totally thumbs down. We drove all the way from Ottawa. Got there. Ordered. Very dissapointed. Mind you, the place was packed. Hardly any pigment left on a single customer's head inside. The fries were nowhere close to my standard or the exceptional standard they produced last season. Too bad. My accomplice's fish, while a generous portion size, was greasy - where as last season, it too had been exceptional (perfect). Sincerely hope we caught them on an off day.
My review from 2018 - below. Definately a great place for fish and chips One of the secrets to their success is likely because they specialize. Basically, they do two things really well: beautifully battered and cooked-to-perfection hadoc, and really good tasting golden fries.
I don't eat fish - but my accomplice does. The chips (which I happily inhaled) were surprisingly and delightfully delicious.
Really well-organized and pleasant employees. Amazing pricing (really resonable). Good portions of top...
Read moreAlthough the food was good, and service was friendly, ultimately one shouldn’t have to wait an hour for a takeout order. We called our 6pm order in at 1:30pm on Good Friday. I know it’s Good Friday and fish is the hot commodity but when we arrived at 6, it wasn’t ready. They made us pay and said they would phone us. My husband went back at 6:30 since we have a toddler that needs to go to bed at 7 and now hasn’t eaten, but still not ready. The moms out there will understand the dinner planning and frustration caused when it doesn’t work out. By 7, they had it ready. That was disappointing as far as service. They should have told us initially that there would be a wait so we could plan a different option. We did our part by calling in hours in advance.
Fries were good but we found the batter on the fish to be very thick, too thick I would say. I spent my whole life in Montreal doing pub food, and beer batter isn’t generally this cakey. It was delicious nonetheless but we ended up eating just the fish out of the batter. A few bites were great but it quickly became too heavy. Priced very well we just thought that the wait...
Read moreWent in for a pick up order for their special of the day: haddock and chips for $9.99. Was not impressed with the food, despite hearing good things from my co-workers.
Was told by co-workers that the batter was golden and lightly battered, but I got dark brown and crunchy thick batter instead.
A person sitting at the table when I arrived was peeling the batter off the fish, which also appeared dark brown and thick.
Also, I was told the portion of fish was large, but I guess when you get the haddock special, it's a small portion.
I think the only good thing about my meal was the fries, which were golden in colour and crispy rather than dark and crunchy like the fish batter.
My meal did not come with coleslaw, which I thought was odd; it came with a soft drink instead.
I did tell my co-workers to try Halibut House locations if they are ever near one because the fish portions, even when it is the daily special, are quite large, and the batter is ALWAYS golden and lightly battered.
Perhaps, I came in on a bad day. I like to support local businesses, so I hope to hear soon that things have improved, so I can make my...
