We went here for dinner on "Mexican" Monday for the first time. I've eagerly enjoyed going to Tony's in Collingwood several times over the past 30 years, and this new location didn't disappoint!! The atmosphere is warm and cozy and very clean. Our server, Pam, was absolutely AMAZING!!! Very animated in telling us about the delicious specials available and she wasn't wrong about how amazing they were! I had recommended this place to take 3 Brits, so the test was definitely on!! Here's what was said: Let's start at the drinks.. two draught beer for the boys in the perfect size and weighted "manly" vessels and a white wine spritzer served on ice and fizzy with a sidecar of extra fizzy. Great start! (although they did find it odd there wasn't Creemore Springs available on tap.. didn't seem to be an issue after their first sips, however!) We ordered the deep fried pickles to start. OH MY. What a completely new twist! 4 HUGE Tempura battered dills served with a Chipotle mayo, we were almost fighting over them! The absolute BEST we've ever had. So light and crispy. A perfect compliment to the draughts as well. (Apparently, I am now getting a deep fryer for Christmas. I'd rather have a gift certificate for Tony's!!) Moving on.. The special, the Mexican pan fried pickerel (I believe) was beautiful in the rich spices and crisp fries. Could have eaten just the fish and been stuffed! Well done! Liver & onions with potato & veggies was extremely tender and flavourful, #1 out of every other place he'd ever eaten it (other than his Mum's, of course - but I think that may have been that she was at the table with us.. also a good reason his veggies were hidden in his napkin at end..) Being from Yorkshire, the stuffed Yorkies were under careful scrutiny. These massive, stuffed bits packed with beef and gravy were tender.. just lovely.. and she ate every. single. bite of this GIGANTIC serving (Don't look under the tiny piece of pudding left, nothing to see there.. move along..) Lastly, my Weiner Schnitzel was 💯% as expected and how I've come to love Tony's. Served hanging over my plate, bigger than my face, tender inside and crisp outside over a bed of fresh veggies and potato. I took more than half home.. but I know better. I needed that famous homemade cheesecake. Drizzled in caramel and raspberry, split in two to share. And it, like everything else for the evening, was superb. Thanks, Tony's Iron Skillet and especially, Pam, for living up to my rave reviews and recommendations that THIS would be a great choice. Four more happy...
Read moreWe were told great things about this restaurant, and maybe our expectations were a little high, so we were slightly disappointed. I tried to make a reservation by emailing the Wasaga Beach location this past weekend, we never heard back after THREE emails! No where on the website did I see we had to make a reservation, but I clicked the link to email them anyway just to be safe. No answer. We arrived near 7pm, the restaurant was slightly full, the first thing the Host asked is if we had a reservation? LOL! I pleasantly said no, he was able to give us a table and told us it would likely be a 20 min wait as they just had a large crowd arrive. We said no problem, we will enjoy our beer. It was 40 minutes later they delivered our order. Okay we are on vacation, but we were starving. I order the stuffed Yorkshire and enjoyed it immensely. It was delicious. My husband ordered the Weiner Schnitzel and found it very dry. There was no sauce on it, but they did offer bacon or Swiss cheese on top which both cost extra. He chose the bacon at a $3.49 up charge. We were NOT informed it would be extra and we were not informed that the Schnitzel didn’t come with a sauce of any sort. So he was deeply disappointed in his entire meal. Gravy came with it, but not enough for the size of the schnitzel. As we were leaving the host asked how things were, so my husband mentioned the 3 reservation emails I had sent with no response, immediately he assumed I must of sent them to the wrong address because he checks his email once a day. I said No, I did not send it to the wrong address and I used the link provided. Thus the war of words continued. Now I am getting a little upset and chose to drop it and walk away. This Host has a job to diffuse an issue not create one. Would I go back, maybe, but not for awhile, I am still a little miffed. The portions are large, but so are the prices. P.s. the vegetables were fresh cut and...
Read moreWent with high hopes after seeing them on a tv show. It's just okay. A big menu full of attractive comfort food options.
Portions are not huge. Ordered a Caesar and it was very strong (more vodka than clamato, some may like this!).
Hubby wanted to try the blackened steak as it's apparently one of the speciality dishes. I'm not sure if waitress didn't hear him or if he didn't ask for it but he just got a regular steak. When he expressed disappointment that he'd only ordered it to try the blackened style the chef is known for, the waitress didn't seem apologetic, just said he didn't ask for it blackened. It would have been nice if anything was offered to make it right. Or if she'd asked when he requested a steak if he wanted it blackened (if it's a specialty they're known for, shouldn't they ask?). Anyway, she was friendly, just rushed and we would have been happier if he got the steak he wanted.
I had the lamb shank which was delicious but not all that meaty. You don't get a "choice" of potato. We were told the potato was mashed today, so mashed it was - - fine because we love a good mash. Just noting it.
I was asked if I wanted gravy and I did. It was a thick brown gravy like the packaged or canned stuff for poutine.
As much as I love that salty brown gravy, this dish would've been next level if served with the sauce from the roasted lamb since it was advertised as lamb shank cooked in a red wine sauce which I'm sure is out of this world based on how good the lamb was.
Would've liked the lamb even more if it was served WITH some of that sauce. It WAS very tasty and tender!
The interior is dated but it's Wasaga and they have a good reputation, why fix what isn't broke is probably the general feeling.
All in all, it's for the most part, classic comfort food and not bad-- but there is always room for...
