Authentic Asian cuisine at prices that are cheaper than nearby competition. The food is inconsistent. Sometimes, it is superb and other times it is meh. For instance, I've ordered the vegetable fried rice 3 times now. The first time, it had plenty of veggies--bok choy and nappa, as well as little bits of tofu. The best veggie fried rice I've ever had. The 2nd time, it had only rice and a tiny sprinkling of frozen peas/corn/carrots. (The veggies were hot, not frozen, but they looked exactly like what you get when you buy Green Giant frozen mixed veg at the supermarket). What a disappointment. The 3rd time, it had lots of 1-inch blocks of fried tofu, and a sprinkling of frozen peas/carrots. I liked it better when it had tofu AND greens.
We've had better success with the cripsy fried curry chicken with rice. It is very good. Sometimes, they pour the curry sauce on top of your chicken. Other times, they provide it on the side in a cup. The curry is very mild.
The teriyaki chicken dish is very tasty, also. Given my mixed experience with the veggie fried rice, I think I'll be sticking to the teriyaki chicken donburi from now on. The teriyaki beef donburi is not your typical teriyaki beef. It looked and tasted like Cantonese beef and broccoli stir fry on white rice. It was tasty. It just wasn't teriyaki.
Stay away from the oyakodon. It is meh. For a superb oyakodon, go to Momo's, which is in the University Plaza, just a block away.
I wouldn't say Foodie Fruitie has the absolute best Asian food, but the food is decent, and it does have the absolutely lowest price. They also give you a 15% discount if you follow them on instagram, so the price then...
Read moreYou can get second helpings of noodles here for free if you order certain dishes, which is nice... If the noodles were better. "Ramen" is far from it, though not bad in their own right. They're just not ramen noodles by any stretch of the imagination.
Other typical dishes include fried rice, yakiudon, sushi selection before a certain time in the evening, and fried snacks. Portions are quite large, so the value is good enough for most students. Seating can also accomodate large parties (~10) if need be, and with its hours and proximity to student housing, Foodie Fruitie is a favourite hangout for friends. However, Foodie Fruitie is not a place I could see myself going to on my own accord when looking for a good meal, even at the reasonable price/portion ratio. There are simply better options.
If you come in a large group, you will also get some freebies (usually takoyaki). Complementary salad is given at meal start, and ice cream (usually red bean) is offered at the end.
Bubble tea is also served, but is not anything special given the many many bubble tea places in the area. Alcoholic beverages such as highball cocktails, and import beers are...
Read moreService is actually all up to your luck. It can get really really slow cuz students that dine in are all over the place. Food are either hit or miss imo. U might want to try out different items to see if this is a place for you. Just average overall tho. Personally, for some reason I don't really like their taste and flavour.
However, portions are larger than average meals u get in the university neighbourhood, which is a pro for sure, like free rice/noodle refill and stuff. And free seaweed salad and ice cream are served too. For the party more than 5 ppl, they also offer another free snack. And all rice meals include salad and a small bowl of miso soup on the side.
‼️HOWEVER, make sure to ask the waiters/waitresses about the free ice cream and stuff. Since quite often if you don't ask, they just ignore those by default especially during busy hours.
Basically the amount of food u get is a big plus for this place. Other than that, just meh to me. The 4th star is for the portion. The taste only deserves 3 stars based on...
