Midnight Run Cafe — Restaurant in Waterloo

Came here to do a bit of a study date but unfortunately their wifi does NOT work. When speaking to others that were there apparently the wifi never works here, so be prepared it is not a good place to study or work unless you have a data plan. Fortunately I was able to hotspot off my phone. The food and drinks were good enough. Most of the staff (those who took orders and made food) were quite friendly. The one employee who seemed to be more of a manager/cleaner (or maybe owner I’m not sure) kept aggressively cleaning the table around our stuff (there was no mess or change of people sitting at the table), but she would come by every 10-15 minutes and aggressively clean and slam down a note that said “two hour maximum” meanwhile at this point we had only been there for about an hour. Considering we came to get some work done and use the internet, bought $30 worth of food and drinks only to sit down and NOT have the internet working I don’t think spending an hour there quietly working should have been an issue. While she didn’t directly speak to us it felt very passive aggressive and happened at least 4 times. I went with a friend who loves this place, I found it disappointing. When I go to a cafe I want a space to sit and relax and chat... unfortunately when I got there the majority of seats were taken up by students on laptops. I get the need for study spaces, luckily the University libraries have plenty of seating for that purpose. Some of the staff were very nice, but who I take is the owner or manager gave off a majorly uninviting vibe. As I went to open the front door to enter he comes whizzing out, with barely a greeting. While inside the space, the owner/manager decided to position himself at one of the few empty chairs on his laptop and occasionally went to help his barristas. I did not see him smile or engage with any of the customers once. If that is the type of way to run a business then I am appalled. The barristas behind were lovely, though half of them did not engage with customers either. The food is overly piced for the portions you get and I honestly feel they're inflated because of the student demographic. Overall I was not impressed with what could be a lovely little cafe to meet friends in. I ordered a small hot chocolate and a small brownie, and left not feeling...

Awful and rude barista ( older woman). I’ve been a loyal customer for quite some time now like over a year… no issues at all but this one older barista just gave me dirty looks because I chose not to Tip?take in when I come here I’m always buying like 2 drinks and a cake or something. She eye rolled me and then when I sat, she came by like 3x interrupting my work and made it quite obvious she was trying to make me feel uncomfortable and leave. She then came to me and said can we get you anything else …eye roll… because there’s a 2 hour limit here… continue to eye roll. AND btw there were like 2 groups of students who were sat there before I came in and she never spoke to them about the 2 hour limit….. If you don’t enjoy your job why do you work here? It’s not the first time she’s given me these dirty looks either and take in the cafe was empty so plenty of tables for anyone to come in. I also didn’t really stay 2 hours, it was just such unnecessary and rude behaviour! It’s unfortunate because the rest of the baristas are quite nice. You’d think if you’re a loyal customer you’d get at least decent or normal treatment /customer...
