I wish I had something better to say, but there has been a significant change in the product and quality. Based on this most recent experience I would guess it is under new ownership. I have been a proud supporter for 20+ years and frequently recommend them to anyone who asks where to go for good fish and chips.
First off, NewFoundLands Own has always prepared everything in house, including their vinegar. It is mild and goes wonderfully with their fish, which has always been beautifully white, flaky and delicious cod. Tonight I was served a grey, textureless and tasteless pollock. I will happily pay more anywhere I go to avoid pollock, if that is all they server, I will leave without ordering. Now if that wasn't bad enough, the batter was no longer their light and crispy homemade batter. It was definitely thick, fell off the fish and tasted of old, oxidized oil. I still have a horrible after taste in my mouth. Lastly the fries, definitely not cooked enough, and wasn't even seasoned. Fries 101, season your fries as soon as they come out of the fryer or they will be bland and tasteless. I also noticed they didn't lightly dress the fries with homemade vinegar like they have always done in the past (I requested it when I order because I didn't recognize any of the workers.) When all you do is 1 thing, in this case fish and chips, you need to do it really well and get all the little details right.
All I can say, is I was extremely disappointed. NewFoundLand, you need to do better, and you have done better for nearly 30 years. Yes times are tough, your customers will understand the need for a price increase to maintain a high quality product. They won't remain your customer, if you lower your standards and serve a substandard product. Remember, if you won't take care of your customers,...
Read moreFirst time I tried to go there, I called them on my drive there, to place my order. They said they don't do pre-ordering, I have to order at the register, and that it only takes 4 minutes from ordering until when you receive it. I went, I ordered, 15 minutes (not 4 minutes) later they finally gave me my food.
Today was the second time I tried them. I went to the register, I ordered, I paid. I said I'm going to wait outside as I have my dog in my car and I'm going just get him out and let him have some air. I don't like to leave him in there more than 2 minutes as it was fairly warm. They repeated their same "4 minutes from ordering, it's in your hands", but then said "and due to covid you have to wait inside because we can only have 3 people in the store. So now we can't pre order, or leave. I said I had my dog in the car and last time i was here for 15 minutes. I am not leaving my dog in a car for 15 minutes. The guy said "no, it only takes 4 minutes. 8 minutes later, I got my food and was allowed to exit the store.
How can they not let you pre-order, or let you leave the store after you order and pay? You're basically expected to pay and wait until they say you can leave. A friend of mine went there when it was busy and said "when it is busy, there is no way they can do everyone's order in 4 minutes". Exactly! They should stop lying and just say, it'll be 10 minutes and of when you come back there are 3 people in the store, then you'll have to wait outside. Like normal people would.
They are ridiculous! I will not...
Read moreUPDATE: I finally got into Newfoundland's Own Fish and Chips to get a takeout order. The price is reasonable and the fish and chips tasted very good. A one piece order has a extra small piece of fish and the 2 piece order does as well. There are lots of chips as well. They are closed Sunday and Monday. A one-piece order is $10.40 plus tax and a two-piece order is $15.50 plus tax. I have been back two or three times and have enjoyed it each time.
I wish I had something good to say about Newfoundland's Own fish and chips. I have been there twice. The first time I went it was a day they were closed. The next time I went I checked online to see when they closed and I am pretty sure it said they were open until 8:30. I got there just after 8 o' Clock and they were closed again. Most of the time I am in the area after I have been to the dentist up the street and I have other shopping to do before I want to go there. Don't know whether it is worth wasting my time trying to get there again if they're going to be closed before the time they advertised on the internet. I live outside Dunnville and when I do go to Welland it's usually to the dentist and other shopping that...
