WARNING: Do NOT book an 11:30am reservation for a Sunday!!! Disappointing experience at Makimono Whitby on Father's Day! On May 28, I booked an 11:30am reservation for Sunday June 15 for 2 people, myself and my Dad. He loves sushi and I was looking forward to taking him out. We arrived on time, at 11:30am, and the door was locked. The "OPEN" sign in the window was lit up/on. We then noticed the hours on the door said opens at 12pm on Sundays. I called the phone number and a lady answered, telling me they are not opened until 12pm. She then came and opened the door, and I proceeded to explain we have a confirmed reservation for 11:30am, so I was very confused why I was able to make a reservation for a time that isn't part of their hours. She could not explain the mishap and was not friendly or apologetic. She said we can pick a seat, but they will not take our order until noon. Being Father's day, I did not want to disappoint my Dad anymore and leave, so we stayed. However, I will never return and give them my business because of the confusion, but more importantly because of the bad attitude of the employee! So rude. Furthermore, they need to get their hours of operation and reservation hours fixed! How could they allow me to book an 11:30am reservation, but they open at 12pm? Makes absolutely no sense! And then to have the "OPEN" sign lit up, even more misleading! I've attached screenshots of my reservation confirmation email and the text message reminder! Also, Makimono's reservation portal showing the earliest reservation to book is 11:30am on a Sunday, and then their Google hours. Ridiculous, disorganized and unfriendly experience.

Unfortunately will not be returning due to poor and deceptive service. I asked my server specifically if drinks were included with the AYCE dinner and she confirmed “yes, anything in the soft drinks category”. We proceeded to order a ginger ale, apple juice, cranberry juice and a hot cup of green tea. When the bill came, we were surprised to see all the drinks (even the green tea) charged to us. When I asked the server if this was a mistake, we were told “all drinks are charged, only water is free”. I reminded her that she had previously confirmed everything was included, to which she smiled, admitted to her mistake but did nothing to the charges. Instead, we were told that if we did not/could not pay she would pay for the drinks herself. Absolutely abysmal end to an otherwise mediocre meal. Other things to note - restaurant is smaller than it appears, paper is laid on top of tables to hide very dirty tablecloths, $8 Toddler (2-4yrs) charge is not posted until you see the iPad, very limited selection of sushi/ cooked items, sushi rice is plain and not seasoned.

For $40 per person on a Sunday save your money and go to McDonald’s at least you know you’ll be disappointed for the price. The volcano roll was the best thing about my meal. They also size down on the food, for instance the enoki beef rolls is suppose to be 4 pieces but they only send 2 with your order. The green dragon roll is suppose to be 8 pieces but only gave 4. The spicy salmon roll is void of any spice. The mango salad is a laugh… it’s literally one fork of mango… not even a full fork at that. If that’s not enough to deter you maybe the flies will be. There is a crazy amount of fruit flies that you will be fighting off as you try to eat your sad disappointing dinner. Bathrooms were dirty. There was a pool of water around the one toilet, so literally standing in toilet water as you pee and in the other stall a woman was vomiting. Overall horrible experience and the last time we go. Pic is my laughable mango salad.

Edit to add: things then went from bad to worse. I contacted management as they asked me to, and requested a refund. They obliged and asked me to pick it up that evening. As soon as I went in, the manager started badgering me to take my review down. She blamed covid, the weather and various other things for my terrible dining experience. She was unable to refund my card as they had “exceeded their daily refund amount”, I said cash was fine. She asked if a cheque was okay and I obliged. She called the owner. She then came back and said she’d only be refunding my meal. I told her my sister also had a bad experience and could not eat her food, and if both meals were not refunded she would leave a review as well. She wrote me a cheque and then handed it to me, then told me “this check is only for you if you remove your review”. I told her the discussion was over. She then followed me while leaving the restaurant telling me to take my review down. I thought my dining experience was the worst part of this restaurant. I was wrong.

Absolutely horrendous experience. Went on a Saturday night and was seated right away. The waitress stomped up to our table and we said “good evening! How are you?” And she just barked “drinks?” At us, nothing else. We ordered our drinks and preceded to order food via our phones. The sushi pizza came first. Mine was good. Super oily, but good but my sisters had very little tuna on it and she said it tasted weird. It went straight downhill from there. We ordered sushi that was inedible. The tuna was mixed with something chewy and tasted off and the chicken tasted downright old. The server walked past our table multiple times and never offered refills or even looked at us. They didn’t bring out half the food we ordered but we were so turned off that we ordered dessert so we could leave. The ice cream came and it was freezer burnt. At this point we had to get to a movie so I was attempting to get the server to get our bill. She literally came over to our table, took the soy sauce to give to another table and completely ignored me. I had to go and find a bus boy to ask for our bill. The robot waiter was nicer, more prompt and said more words to us than our human waitress. I used the washroom on the way out and that was an even bigger mistake. It was filthy. And I mean FILTHY. Wads of wet toilet paper on the floor and water everywhere. The taps and toilets looked like they’d NEVER been cleaned. I checked the sheet on the wall and it said the washroom was checked at 6pm by a staff and was signed by the staff, this was at 6:07pm. Our meal cost NINETY DOLLARS and most was inedible. This was the first time in my 35 years on earth that I didn’t tip. The service wasn’t bad, it was appalling. I will be warning friends...

I would only consider ordering from this restaurant again if there was a zombie apocalypse and they were literally the last place from which to get safe food. Not because the food is bad, but because staff are rude to a point that it stops being infuriating and actually starts being funny.

When my order arrived, it was missing items. When I called, saying "Hey, my order arrived and it's missing items, I'm wondering what I can do to have the rest of it come?", the woman on the phone told me my missing food would not being coming (silly me), offered no apology, and then proceeded to tell me off for calling her at all - as I should have contacted the food delivery service. According to her, they pay the service so that they will "deal with the customers".

When I insisted that the remaining part of my order be sent, or that I be reimbursed, she told me the remaining part of my order would not be sent, and I could only get restaurant credit - to the restaurant that had just messed up my order. When I said that was not acceptable, she told me I was causing trouble, she was busy (I was rudely interrupting her busy shift of getting orders wrong), and then she... wait for it... HUNG UP ON ME.

So naturally I called back because obviously I must love torturing myself and also at this point I actually thought it was kind of funny. Kind of like those gimicky restaurants where you pay money for the server to insult you the whole time.

Anyways I asked for the same women I spoke to previously. She then lied and denied she had hung up on me. She barked at me again that she was really busy and I was causing problems (because they messed up my order and I was asking for my money back - the audacity of me). I asked for someone in charge. She then informed me that the manager "wasn't there" and was also "too busy" to come to the phone.

I told her that her response was rude an unacceptable, that I would not be ordering from them ever again and I would have to leave a bad review. She seemed completely unfazed. Probably because bad reviews are commonplace here. She then hung up the phone on me for the second time.

At no point did she say sorry for the wrong order. At no time did she take responsibility for hanging up the phone on me, or apologize for it. The whole exchange was really surreal. I felt like I was in the Upside Down of sushi restaurants.

And things don't really improve when you're in the restaurant either! Definitely have to fend for yourself Hunger Games style if you're ever going to get your food. They certainly will never thank YOU for ordering. Definitely eat here if you want to feel like an inconvenience to them the whole night.

If you somehow still choose to eat here after this review: may the odds be ever in...

WOREST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND Management team. Don't ruin your day by visiting this place.

I had heard bad reviews about this place in the past but experienced it myself first hand.

My father in-law was usual customer there and he took us there for sushi. From the start to the actual peak moment the experience was awful. We had to go and get both fork and straw ourselves after waiting 10min for each request as according to them the servers were on break. On top of that, one of the servers slip through a hot shrimp plate on me ruining My clothes and brand new sneakers especially my pants. I was very respectful and patience as this can happen to anyone but the worst point came when asked for manager there was no floor manager on a day like weekend and the server says she is the manager just for the day. Even after looking at situation she wasn't apologetic. Our food was on the table and we had only started our food when this happened but due to mess on my clothes and ruining our mood and experience we decided to leave. The guy who mistakenly slipped the plate was very apologetic and i told him it is all good, i was more upset about manager's response and lack of customer service then him. Funny enough the lady who said is the manager for the day brought another guy named "Alfred" who was like, what happened i heard a sauce spilled?" i am like go ask your manager cuz i can't go through details after washing and changing my T-shirt. Him and the assumed manager was like since the order was already in the computer we will have to process a receipt, that is when i get abit angry and let them know that i was being very respectful and not claiming the damage you guys did to my $200+ pants and t-shirt, brand new sneakers and your claiming payment for the food we didn't get to mid of it let along finishing it (all food ordered was on the table and or yet to come). They had to call the manager and came back with..okay pay for 1 person only (bargaining- very unprofessional as if we ate and wanted for free), which i didn't as the food was not eaten and they ruined our experience to even enjoy the food causing us to leave.

Feedback to management and "Jenny" who according to Alfred is the actual manager: Please train the servers well to provide good customer experience if you don't want to lose your loyal customers. AND when away please have a manager in the floor who can actually make decision and not bargain with people especially when it is your team's fault (big time).

And don't take advantage of people who are not yelling and making a scene and try to be respectful when it is your team's fault.

Will never go there and they have surely lost another...
