Ouch. Talk about a disappointment. My wife and I were really craving sushi after a long day of packing boxes (we're moving). After searching on Google for a place we've never tried, we came across sushi ninja in Whitby. Intrigued, we decided to give it a shot as we always like to try new places.
For an order, we got a Sushi Ninja roll and the combo that includes spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy crab. Lastly, we also purchased the assorted Tempura.
Specific review:
Sushi Ninja Roll - absolutely nothing special about this roll. There is nothing distinct in terms of flavors. My wife said the roll has a very 'fishy' aftertaste. Overall, not very good
Spicy Tuna - this one tasted really off. The rice itself on the roll felt stale, as if this was made the day before or the morning of. The rice was also colder than the rest of the roll, almost as if this was refrigerated prior to the order. Definitely did not taste like it was made to order.
Spicy salmon - rice felt stale but not as bad as the spicy tuna. Nothing special
Spicy crab - the 'freshest' of the 3 maki rolls, the rice tasted fine and the filling tasted fine as well. Similar to the quality that you would get at an all you can eat.
Tempura - This order was pretty disappointing as well. The batter felt very stale, no crunch at all. Don't get me wrong, we had it as take out and there is a possibility that the tempura took in moisture during the drive home, but from when I picked it up to getting home (10 minutes drive), the tempura was already lukewarm at best.
In summary, fairly disappointing experience. Personally, the sushi from grocery stores tasted better than what we had today. The staff were nice though, but probably wouldn't give it...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWent to Sushi Ninja after seeing on the Durham Region Eats Facebook group that they were having a grand opening event. They were offering 20% off plus free items with orders over $30, $50 and $80 before tax and after the 20% discount. We of course aimed for the $80 because the free item was the pressed sushi combo.
To start, the restaurant has cute vibes with anime posters on one wall, shelves of asian snacks in one corner and cute decor all over. Staff were nice and answered all my questions patiently over the phone regarding their grand opening special. They got our order all correct and on time. Their packaging is also very aesthetic.
We order the party tray D, one order of each of the torched sushi, the Hot Miami roll, the Whitby roll and we got the pressed sushi for free with the grand opening special. The sashimi was super fresh and tasty. The eel and scallop pressed sushi were also very good. We did find that some of the rolls did lack some flavour, especially the torched sushi. We found it didn't have the "torched" taste that we're used to. The spicy salmon roll also wasn't spicy at all. The Hot Miami roll was very flavourful. The tuna tartar was delicious, but we also didn't find it spicy.
Overall, this is definitely one of the better sushi spots that we've been to in Durham. Happy to see more good asian restaurants...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSticky floor. Specially the entrance. Same store outline as pervious store, nothing special. Good discount, but expensive comparing by the quality of the food.
The order didnāt have any soy sauce , wasabi for sushi, Feel like Not complete meal. The free takoyaki is warm outside, and cold inside. It feels like they reheat by microwave. Fish arenāt fresh enough too; sashimi taste like frozen food, still have ice and cold inside. Next, the sushi rice is taste like Chinese rice, doesnāt taste any vinegar inside, and not as soft as sushi rice. However, this is my options. There are still many good and made from heart food in Durham could...
