Posting for my friend Dave Roberts! Tonight at Chuck’s Roadhouse in Lindsay (I’m sorry but I’m old and I couldn’t figure out how to tag Chucks in Lindsay, so I selected the next closest option, perhaps someone can share this somehow with them) I saw something that bothered me. An 18-year-old was told they couldn’t sit at the bar counter with her friends but could sit two feet away at a table behind them. Staff claimed this was Ontario law and (when I didn’t do what I should have done, mind my own business, enjoy my wings and go home to bed, respecting my peace more than “injustice”) I called staff on it. They said to me they had “the paperwork” from the ACGO to show this as being the law. As someone who served 20 years as a police officer and worked directly with provincial legislation, I can say confidently: there is no such law.
Ontario’s Liquor Licence and Control Act prohibits serving alcohol to anyone under 19 and allows licence conditions that restrict minors in certain establishments. But it does not prohibit a legal adult (18) from simply sitting at a bar counter in a family restaurant if no alcohol is served to them.
What frustrated me wasn’t just the rule itself, businesses can set house policies if they want, but the insistence on presenting a house rule as legislation, and then refusing to admit otherwise., was obtuse. I called the manager on their bluff, asked to see said paperwork, which I was told was just behind the counter, and then twenty minutes later reapproached by said manager who told me that they had just talked to their owners who told them to just ask me to settle up and leave. This misleads the public and disrespects customers.
I don’t usually post negative reviews, but I felt this crossed a line. People deserve to be treated with honesty and fairness, whether the issue is age, race, sex, or any other human rights ground. Misstating the law to justify a decision only erodes trust. Especially this day and age. Especially after what’s been happening in the States. Hiding behind a shield of “legislation” when no such legislation exists just erodes our trust in institutions. It results in a “us vs them” mentality when what we should strive for is an us along with us mentality. I know they won’t miss my business, but I needed to get this out of my head. — eating dinner at...
Read moreWorst experience I have had in years...
I never had to write a review before, but I will take the time in this case.
The reason we went to Chuck's roadhouse was the positive review we read in a local magazine; I am shocked that we would have had such a regrettable experience.
I went Saturday night with my 2 young daughters. The place was quite busy but I did not see a line-up, and they were able to sit us right away. The lady who received us was quite polite but everything after that went downhill.
It started with the strong smoking smell coming from people smoking at the door, but I have seen worse so I brushed it aside.
The interior is quite different from the past restaurant, and the decor looked nice. The menu was appealing and the pricing was quite low, but the positive comments stops here.
Someone took or order quickly, but the food arrived more than 1 hour (yep, 60 minutes later). We never had anyone visiting our table for 1 hour to follow-up, or see if we needed refill on our drinks. Once the meal arrived the fries were obviously re-heated a few times. At least the steak was well cooked. It did not taste particularly tasty or tender but it was cooked to specification.
It would have been nice to have cutlery and napkins for the meal but I guess it was overlooked? After waiting a few more minutes in front of our cold meal I was able to find someone to bring me a fork... We did get ketchup, as requested, but we should have called back when we realized it was an empty bottle. By that time I just wanted to get out of there.
There is nothing worse than having your kids ask if we were getting treated like this because we did something wrong. Maybe we did, I just don't know what ? I still left the full tip because that is the right thing to do, but I honestly wondered if anybody there even realized there were people sitting at our table.
I saw that the people at the next table returned something to the kitchen, but I did not think too much about it at the time.
I am puzzled as to the list of positive reviews because I saw a lot of unhappy faces in the restaurant while...
Read moreThis review is geared to this location only. I generally like Chucks but I won't eat at the Main st location again. Several months ago I ordered their porterhouse steak. I was sick for a week. This was the last place I ate at. Since my cousin ordered the same dish and he was fine; I couldn't be 100% it was this place that made me sick. However I did return my steak for another one and it tasted weird. Again I can't be 100% sure. I thought it may have been a bad cut. I don't know. A few months have passed by now and I decided to go back in again. I ordered the Porterhouse steak again. I waited a long time for my food to arrive. When when I did get it, my steak was cold. Why would a steak come to the table cold is beyond me. Did my waitress forget about it? Was it from a previous order? Who knows? I just remembered being sick the last time. I reported it to the waitress and she was apologetic and offered to warm the steak up. However I had waited a long time to get my food and I was hard pressed for time. I was also paranoid of sending it back because of my previous experience. Manager totally ignored mr and sent the waitress to deal with me. I only at a quarter of the steak. They offered a 25% discount off the bill. I felt they should have taken the price of the steak entirely off the bill. I have visited many other Chucks Roadhouses and have never had a problem. I have been now twice to this location and both visits have been a horrible experience. In addition the management is the worse I have ever seen. The waitress was nice though. She was very apologetic. I don't think I can ever go to this location again. I just can't trust them.
For the record: My wife's...
