Is There Such a Thing as a Perfect Breakfast? At The Wooden Spoon in White Rock, I think we may have found one.
The Warmest WelcomeâBefore We Even Stepped In Before the door even opened, we were greeted on the sidewalk with a big, genuine smile. Seconds later, another server welcomed us inside with just as much authenticity. We didnât have a reservation, but that didnât shake her enthusiasm one bit. She quickly found us a table that was free for the next 90 minutes and asked, âWill that work for you?â It worked perfectly.
Hospitality That Feels Like Home The vibe was friendly, gracious, and unhurriedâfrom beginning to end. You can tell this team doesnât just work in hospitality⌠they live it.
My Breakfast: Sweet, Salty, and Absolutely On Point đł I ordered the Sweet & Salty, and honestly, it was next-level. A gorgeously done French toast with a thin grilled cheese layer on top (yes, it worksâand itâs amazing), topped with a perfectly poached egg and some of the best bacon Iâve ever had in a brunch spot.
The hollandaise was velvety and balanced. Rich, but never heavy. The yolk? Runny and golden. And while I didnât ask if the maple syrup was real, I was already too busy enjoying the experience to worry about it.
A Side Note on the Sausage I tried the chicken sausage on the sideânot quite my personal favorite, as I usually lean toward porkâbut I admire the menu for offering this thoughtful alternative. Itâs a great inclusion for guests with dietary preferences.
Family Favorites, Too My wife ordered the Bay Benny with Cajun shrimp and called the potato wedges âthe best Iâve ever had.â Thatâs not an easy title to win. Our son also loved his meal. We all enjoyed some latte coffees, smooth and delicious from first sip to last.
Now⌠A Shoutout Where Itâs Due đ¨âđłđĽ Looking around the restaurant, I couldnât help but notice something important: the cooking is consistently beautiful at every table. Every plate that came out looked just as meticulous as ours.
That kind of consistency doesnât happen by accidentâitâs a reflection of a team that takes deep pride in their craft. So hereâs a huge shoutout to the cooks: đ Thank you for your precision, your attention to detail, and your incredible professionalism. Every elementâtexture, color, timingâwas on point. You made breakfast an art form. đ
Comfort Meets Class The wooden chairs are surprisingly comfortable. The decor strikes a cozy balance between rustic charm and polished detail. Thereâs also outdoor seating, which is a treat on a sunny White Rock morning. And yesâthe restrooms were spotless, which tells you the back of house is just as cared for as the front.
A Final Word to the Team at The Wooden Spoon What youâve built here is special. Youâre not just serving foodâyouâre creating moments.
In a noisy world, youâve carved out a place of peace, warmth, and excellence. May your kindness continue to ripple outward, one plate and one smile...
Read moreThe waitress with the short âbobâ is rudeâŚshe has an attitude and acts like she hates her job. The staff need to be retrained on restaurant hospitality. When I entered the restaurant, the server walked past me standing by the door, so I stood there for a few minutes waiting to be seated. The bartender also made eye contact and didnât say anything so I assumed that maybe I am supposed to grab a seat considering there were empty tables and given the open concept of the restaurant which felt more like a cafe. Nonetheless, the server started walking toward me again and I asked âdo i wait to be seated or just grab a seatâ and she replied condescendingly and with an attitude. Perhaps, if the multiple people who made eye contact and saw someone standing by the door had greeted or informed that someone would be coming shortly, then there would not be a need for the customer to question. The food was also very average. We were told the there was an issue with the fryer therefore told the wait for fries/poutine would be long and canât guarantee the quality. Thats fine, things happen but when a large portion of the menu offers fries as a sideâŚthis limits options. Certainly would not return after the poor service for subpar food.
EDIT** What a passive aggressive and unprofessional response to valid detailed feedback about customer service. Instead of making excuses for poor service that has nothing to do with equipment malfunctioning (which somehow ârattledâ the staff enough that theyâre unable to greet or even provide basic customer service), perhaps reflect on the customer experience to retrain your staff so when things do go wrong, decent hospitality/etiquette are not compromised. I am glad youâre not concerned about retaining customers, with this type of nasty attitude, maybe someday that will change. Best of luck!
FINAL EDIT** This is truly unbelievable. You seem to be moving the goal post with each reply. So apparently bad service and subpar food with limited options doesnât warrant a 1* review. Please take accountability instead of blaming the customer for not addressing things on site when this is how you choose to address valid feedback on a PUBLIC forum. I can only imagine the hostility if anyone were to bring any issues to you directly. The last 4 reviews after mine ALL gave 1* star reviews with similar complaints yet your responses offer some sense of concern but you continue to double down and lecture me on how to use this platform. I am genuinely appalled and embarrassed for you. Only wasted my time replying because with each of your responses, youâve validated my points and I hope all your customers see...
Read moreI had heard many positive things about the Wooden Spoon and so decided to give it ago to today. I arrived just after noon and there were a number of patrons inside but it was not overly busy. There was one female server who was quite efficient in managing all the tables by herself. There was also a male staff member who seemed to be walking around a lot but other than that I could not tell exactly what his role he was. I did notice he repeatedly glanced the entire time I was there, which was a little disconcerting but what can you do? He never approached me or spoke to me so it was bit odd. Service was a little slow but considering only one person was doing the work it was understandable. For full disclosure I used to always go to the now defunct Poultry on Motion on Marine Drive for my eggs Benedict and for me they set the gold standard. At the Wooden Spoon there are a few options so I just chose the first one on the list which was called The Wooden. Unfortunately, for me, it did not meet the gold standard, but that could be due just to the fact that it was different than what I was used to and others might really like it. It was certainly very tasty and the caramelized onions certainly added some flavour. It wasnât great, but it wasnât bad either. Overall I enjoyed the experience. I had ordered the meal along with a coffee expecting to get the coffee first followed by the meal when ready. Unfortunately both were delivered at the same time and I suspect the server had forgotten about the coffee at first. What I did like was that the coffee came with an ample amount of real cream in a little silver container which you rarely see these days. A nice touch. There are lots of different meals available on the menu and they seem to go a bit further in terms of what you will find in the average breakfast place. But those extra touches came at quite a premium. My bill for eggs Benedict, coffee, taxes and tip added up to a whopping $35 when at my favourite former place the cost would be around $14. Too high for my budget so this will not be my go-to breakfast place. But I would like to try some of the other offerings I saw on the menu so I will probably return occasionally when I am in the mood to treat myself to something new occasionally. Finally there is the issue of parking. Street parking is limited and there are a couple of paid parking lots behind. In the past it was fairly easy to find free parking around White Rock so I find these paid lots popping up everywhere to be annoying. However, drive a little further west along Russell where the restaurant is located and you come to Foster where street...
