I have been trying to support more locally-owned businesses like this Five Guys (I even came to pick up my online order so more of the profit could go to the business instead of SkipTheDishes or Uber Eats) but after my visit on Jan 7 @ 7pm I will not be back.
As I was waiting for my order at the far end of the restaurant, I couldn't help but hear the woman at the cash machine talking to a pair of customers. She was pontificating misinformation about COVID - how the hospitals were actually empty and it was no worse than the flu. She said she didn't know what was happening to the country - the gov't was coming into people's homes to arrest them for celebrating Christmas and ice skating. She went on to rant something about how the PM was giving China $2.7B.
I understand it is a very hard time right now for businesses, but as someone whose family has been seriously impacted by COVID, it was hurtful and frustrating to listen to. I do not wish for punitive action or any such thing for this employee; her politics are none of my business. I did want this restaurant to understand that if you're going to make politics part of your business, it's my prerogative to take my business elsewhere. Likewise, I will take advice and analysis on public health policies from our expert epidemiologists and medical leaders, not from a burger joint.
During this time, the other two staff members (one male, one female) were working hard in the kitchen and were attentive to me as I picked up my order. I have no...
Read moreWhen you first walk into Five Guys, it is a full on sensory overload, from the obnoxious red and white theme everywhere you look, to the greasy smells, loud clanging and shouting orders, I wanted to turn around and leave, but upon my partner's insistence to give it a try, we stayed. Despite being busy the ticket time was quick. The food itself managed to improve my initial impression, and came well-assembled. It was a great value for a meal, and tasted more homemade than your average fast food joint. The menu is simple but there are many free ways to customize your burger or hotdog. I opted to have my cheeseburger lettuce wrapped, it was good, fresh toppings and not too greasy, and with a shared order of regular cajun fries and a shake, I was definitely satisfied. The fries were good, a generous portion, but a little spicy. The best thing I ordered was the coffee milkshake, YUM. Not too sweet and a strong coffee flavor. My partner enjoyed his Oreo milkshake as well. He had a double cheeseburger with bacon, what he referred to as a big mistake. He liked it, but it left him feeling weighed down and uncomfortable, as one would expect from a big greasy burger... I would not dine in here again, but I would have it delivered (which we realized was an option as we saw about 15 Skip the Dishes couriers pick up orders while...
Read moreAlberta gov. Requires restaurants to verify vaccination records for dine in customers and I agree with that fully as we are in the middle of a state of emergency. The south Edmonton location is requesting validation of vaccine including personal ID for takeout customers as well! This puts many in a very difficult situation as well as being humiliated in front of a full restaurant of people! Please advise your staff on proper procedures, curtesy as well as how to treat others with respect! These are difficult times for everyone, disrespect and humiliation of others should not be tolerated, refusal of service in this case had no basis whatsoever! I am an old man, fortunate enough to have traveled many regions around the world and speak several languages with understanding of few more…. It is disrespectful for your staff, while having a conversation with someone in English to start another dialogue with coworkers in a different language while looking the customer in the eye!! Fortunately I understood what was said in Filipino and it wasn’t anything out of subject but this is just another example of how your staff is lacking customer relations training!! Very disappointing experience and I hope the owner as well as the franchise will be prompt in rectifying...
