Aroma Bistro has a way of bringing traditional flavours and new flavours together. They make everything in house and you can definitely taste the quality in their food, not to mention their presentation really let's you know they care.
Deep Fried Wontons: 5/5 stars. Delicious wrapper. Delicious filling. Everything made in house. The issue I have with deep fried wontons is that most of the time the wrapper tends to hold a lot of oil from deep frying, but these are great in that they do not. They are perfectly crispy and they just melt in your mouth.
Chili Wontons: 5/5 stars. The superstar of our meal. These wontons are also made in house from wrapper to filling. They make thousands of these dumplings everyday and they sell, for good reason! It's spicy level is perfect for people who like spicy. It gives you heat with LOADS of flavour, great balance on their part.
Spring Rolls: 3/5 stars. I am 100% a fan of spring rolls generally. There isn't much to say about them. They were good but the reason they are getting only a 3 is because compared to the other food on their menu, I really expected them to put a twist into the traditional spring roll and they didn't.
Honey Garlic Chicken Wings: 3/5 stars. Great in house made sauce. But wings were not crispy. The crispy didn't hold up against the sauce.
Aroma Fried Rice: 5/5 stars. The fried rice is so good. Again a dish that showcases their understanding of excellent flavours.
Fried Beef Udon: 5/5 stars. My fave of our visit. You can taste the flames in this dish and does it taste good. You can taste the wok. The way the beef was cooked and the way the rest of the dish was put together brings me back to my childhood watching woks over flames and I can taste deliciousness in the air.
Hong Kong Style French Toast: 5/5 stars. We got it with peanut butter. I love the texture and the flavour. It is a must try if you are not familiar with Hong Kong...
Read moreAroma Bistro is a tiny restaurant with BIG flavours. (Seriously, there's only one table currently so you might want to call ahead if you're planning to dine-in!) The Red Chili Oil Wontons are made in-house and are one of those dishes that you're going to want to order every single time. I even got a couple bags of frozen wontons to go! LaLa Chicken and Spicy Snow Beef Udon were delicious. I really enjoyed their chili oil chicken broth with the soup. Owner/Chef Louie and his team went above and beyond to make our meal unforgettable. Aroma Bistro will be a regular stop whenever we're in Winnipeg!
UPDATE: I simply cannot express how much I love Aroma Bistro and how appreciative I am of the team for not only creating exceptionally delicious and creative dishes but also a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The menu has been expanded a bit and the dining room has been nicely renovated to include four tables that are comfortably spaced. The Spicy Snow Beef Rice Noodles Soup and Aroma LaLa Chicken are extremely flavourful and my current favourites. The Fruit Teas balance out the richness of the meal well; I had Lychee Green Tea but I bet they're all delicious. Our server was friendly and the food came out quick. Staff were wearing masks. I continue to stock up on frozen Aroma Red Chili Oil Wontons every time we're in Winnipeg and recommend that everyone do the same! This restaurant is absolutely worth the drive from Brandon; just be sure to reserve a...
Read moreTo say this restaurant is excellent would be an understatement. The team at Aroma ensures you are well taken care of, from wonderful and friendly servers, to the chef who comes and introduces himself at each table. As many reviews have noted, they make you feel welcome, appreciated and like family. They even have a system setup so that the delivery drivers get the information they need as well.
The food.... in a word is beautiful. We ordered the Aroma Red Chili Wontons, for which we told them we like them spicy. These were as close to a perfect wonton (or dumpling) that I have ever had. Great heat (could have used a little more personally) with an amazing subtlety of flavours and textures. Ordered a small (9 pieces) but should have ordered the large.
Also ordered the LaLa Chicken appetizer - equally great with a seasoning that felt familiar but also very different as well. Lastly, we ordered vegetarian fried udon noodles - this dish will become my ultimate in cold weather comfort food, as that overall feel of a plate of food your grandmother would serve you to make you feel better.
The Chef is well trained, and clearly honours his Chinese heritage but also has created a variety of dishes that work perfectly for his patrons. This food cannot be called Canadian Chinese, more like Chinese food with a hint of local adaptation.
At the end of the meal my wife suggested this becomes or Saturday lunch tradition. I like that...
