Do you like me want to gatekeep something because it is so good that you are selfish to not share but you want them to do so well and hence share it with anyone and everyone you can - Momo Paradize is that one winnipeg gem of a place. Like god damn I am having double thoughts writing this. But it will be a disservice to the people running this place that I don't speak about them and the food.
So here i am at this location of yesteryear way back when they started Eat On Samosa a Nepali/Bhutani/Tibetean influenced ownership running a samosa and Caribbean style roti place in Pembina by Dalhousie, I am assuming what was their community set up there with Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani diaspora that were their mainstay clientele, now with a location here - I knew one thing that they had one great menu item called MOMO(a tibetean, nepali version of dumpling) - So I venture in and to my surprise it is eat on but momo paradise. I am taken back to reminisce my toronto days wandering queen street and kensington market eating at the tibetean nepali places to get a whiff of home and a tear of joy.
I had a tear of joy looking at the menu and finding the humble momo staring back at me and then my other eye teared because it caught a glimpse of Kothey momos(like gyoza which are pan fried half and steamed half) and this took me back to my trekking memories in nepal and few other indian trekking towns. So I order and wait I get some chai because whai not and then I smell the Momo smell i could only smell it when I make it at home here or when I have it back other home seven seas across - I tell you memories are something. They taste even better silky soft smooth shell not too thick or thin - filled edge to edge without any skimping and made with ever so required herbs and spices that dont overwhelm just the right amount. This was it, it was a shut your eyes close and savour the flavour, feel the fill, entice with the spice - It was home. Now you may understand my gatekeeping comment - something that makes you feel like home you want to share it with more but not want to lose it either.
This place now run by the original owners nephew the ever smiling Tshering is a place you would want to go again and again. To my Canadian and other folks they serve dumplings(momos), noodles, rice, meat dishes and lots of love. To my diaspora(people of the motherland) please dont confuse them with the third class street type momos we get to eat in cities, these are authentic street type momos you get to eat in a mountain towns and trekking homes and the likes - so if you go with a mindset of eating extremely spicy and doughy wrapped street momos dont go here there are many places that serve those shitty momos that will give you acidity or diarrhea or both.
You should try their chicken main and mutton main dish - they are not like those basterdized Indian restaurant serving heavy wrongly spiced and cream and tomato filled gravies - they use fresh herbs, lightly spiced and well cooked and balanced curry dishes.
Must try: Momos any or all our favorites are pork and paneer - favorite prep styles are deviled and fried Jhol. Noodles Nepali thali. Mutton...
ย ย ย Read morePhotos are me forgetting to take pictures beforehand lol. I got the Chatpate, Rasmalai and both the chicken and beef steamed momos. Reason I came here: I missed the nepali food in calgary so i tried the highest rated momo place here. Can i tell you the food is FANTASTIC. I cannot describe how good the momos are. they top the ones in calgary and i will come back later if i get hungry. i paid $13 for like 10 momos for the beef and $13 for 10 chicken momos. THAT IS A STEAL. i went to calgary and got 10 pieces for like $20. The care they put into the food is outrageously good. like you cannot tell me those were not handcrafted. Iโd say the beef momos are better than the chicken ones. they just like melt in my mouth they are so juicy and so perfect for cold or even hot days. the chicken momos are a 10/10. even though they are not as good as the beef, these can beat any dumpling place in the city IN MY OPINION. I will rate the chatpate a 7/10. the spices they put in there were STRONG, not like what i had in calgary, so if you expect and want strong flavours, get this. THE RASMALAI WAS SO GOOD. thats why theres ones 1/2 left in the picture. i rate it a 8.9/10. this is my first time tasting that dessert and i think next time itll be better. the texture is different than what iโm used to in desserts but its so perfect. its not too sweet and i can just eat 20 of them. i paid $45 for 4 dishes. service was great aswell. i was glad to hear the wait time was 15-20 minutes because that usually means the food is fresh. i love this place and i will keep...
