This is an honest review and is our opinion. What works for us may not necessarily work for everyone but we base our comments on the experience we have with this food and what we know to be authentic.
Unfortunately this donair is not an authentic donair. The texture is not that of a donair, the spices are not that of an authentic donair, the pita is not that of a donair and the sauce is weak and runny.
An authentic donair has the texture and consistency of a Greek gyros. It has a texture that is soft not chewy. The spices are sultry and very prominent, the pita is more towards a Greek pita rather then a shawarma like the ones used here and the sauce is thick with a wonderful balance of sweet and salty due to the main ingredients of condensed milk and vinegar.
Like another reviewer pointed out, if you're looking for an authentic donair, this is not the place. We are sure that some people that are not familiar with an authentic donair may like this take on it but not anyone that actually knows what an authentic donair tastes like. For us, we were not impressed. Other then the friendly service and the fresh vegetables, the Donair itself was inedible.
I think that if a business is to sell a product like a donair, it should stick with something similar to a donair. Maybe source out restaurants in Nova Scotia or local that sell authentic donairs, research on how it's done and where they get their product. Doing that will insure more sales because individuals that have no idea what a authentic donair tastes like will be very impressed and individuals that do will keep coming back. As it stands we will not be back.
As for price, they are a little on the high side but that could be due to St. Jacobs Market being a tourist destination. Like any festival, event or tourist destination prices will be higher. Anyone who reviews and complains about that should ask themselves why they would expect anything different, you will pay more at...
Read moreI purchased two doners and they both had to be thrown out. The meat was disgusting. It smelt like rotten cat food. Also the bite I did try was very dry. $35 just thrown in the garage. An expensive mistake. Will not try again. Do not recommend.
To reply to your reply: it has nothing to do with taste. I love donars. I have eaten many before. Your trying to blame my taste buds on your disgusting "food". Also you were not busy on Saturday. I did not wait in line. It was very clear people were avoiding your stand. I should have paid attention. Maybe instead of trying to blame your customers you take a look at what you are serving and try and do better. Your meat is cheap and it was rotten tasting. Maybe a call to the health unit...
Read moreI visited the St. Jacobs Marketplace in Ontario to buy some stuff, and I suddenly discovered that there was a food court inside. I found a place called DONER that offers fresh salad and meat on pita bread, so I decided to try their menu. I ordered a small chicken and beef doner.
The packaging looked great—simple and neat—and it was interesting to watch them make it.
When I tried the beef doner, the veggies and sauce were great, but the beef was a bit dry. However, the chicken was awesome! I’d say I’d definitely add this place to my list, and there’s a good chance I’ll try other items on their menu...
