Hooley's Irish Pub and Restaurant — Restaurant in Guangzhou City

Twice in this place. First time, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner - Sean (as far as I can remember!) who was very kind to introduce me to his bar and to some of his customers - and also very chatty. A great big Irish welcome if ever there was, far from home its great to see.

Tried the Guinness - was told by Sean its coming directly from Dublin - but truth be told it wasn't a great pint at all- sorry to say. Also, the ex pats were the young and bright eyed - a tad bit boring for an old pro and grumpy curmudgeon like myself!

Needed to give the Guinness a chance - so ventured in for another try out - and was happy to say it was much better second time round - disaster diverted! Good pint. Settled down for my pint and ordered some food - at least what I could afford with the very steep prices - got some cheesy chips and gravy - was nice and tasty but coming in at about 17.62 euros with the pint - I nearly felt like i was back home in Dublin with those prices! LOL.

Anyway good ex pat place if that floats your boat - I like my bars to be down and dirty - as a muck savage perhaps I'm not the type of clientele they are going for!...

Quite difficult to get served. I ordered a red wine which they mistakingly thought was to be a white wine, which I said wasn't what I ordered. They kept pushing it on me but and then erupted into arguments behind the bar. I speak fluent Chinese and know what I said but either way a small matter shouldn't take 10 minutes to rectify and all the drama. It's 2024 in china not 2004 . Either way I drank the wine and went elsewhere. Shame as I used to like hooleys for atmosphere but service should be organised and easy going. Had 3 great nights at Hooleys, good food, good atmosphere and the owner is a bloody star.

I was poured a pint of beer into a Carlsberg branded glass with the LFC logo on it. Being a Liverpool fan, I asked if I could buy it from them.

After checking how many he had left, which was this one, the owner said I could have it…….for free!! He said something about although it was their last one, he appreciated me asking for one instead of stealing one (obviously lost a few that way).
