Efes is my go-to spot whenever I’m in Shanghai. Luckily, they’ve opened another branch near Jing’an Temple, so I no longer need to cross over to Pudong when I’m staying on the Puxi side.
What stands out the most is that the Turkish owner is in the restaurant every day, personally overseeing operations—something quite rare for foreign-owned restaurants in Shanghai.
They get very busy on weekends and especially during exhibition periods, so a reservation is a must if you plan to visit during peak hours. Ideally, go after 8:30 PM for the best experience.
Efes only cooks with chargrilled fresh meat, never on gas or electric plates like some other Middle Eastern spots in town. That’s why you won’t find döner kebab or Iskender here—but their meat selection is much better.
Their hummus is Mediterranean-style, with less tahini and more olive oil, not the Arabic version. This isn’t a fast-food place, so if you’re in a hurry, it’s better to come early or later in the evening.
Recommended dishes: mixed meze, soup, Gavurdağı salad, Ali Pasha, and Sultan Sarma. If you’re in a group of 4 or more, definitely listen to the waiter’s suggestions for a set menu—it’s more cost-effective and makes for a better overall...
Read moreVisited the place for dinner with my friends. We were delighted by Halal, middle eastern & Turkish main courses with species and lots of flavors which is mpressive for a vegetarian & non-vegeterian. The service was above average, but the turkish black tea was too unpalatable to finish. When we arrived at 6:20, we’d to wait for 10 minutes while they prepared the table. We didn’t make any reservation, but the restaurant was only half full. There was no good reason to make us wait. I was greatly excited about visiting Efes Turkish Restaurant. The main course was just delicious. I’d love to visit the place again. You can go with your friends, family, partner or whosoever you wish to. Do try this awesome restaurant if you willing to the best Halal, Eastern & Turkish dishes in Shanghai China. Read moreBy far the best halal restaurant for grilled items in Shanghai. I tried 3 Turkish restaurants and they were a joke. This one is authentic. I also tried different halal restaurants and didn't enjoy the food except for one halal Chinese restaurant in a small island.
I have been traveling to Shanghai for work and having difficulties eating. I have skipped dinner for so many nights. Finally I find a place to go everyday. And best of all it's few steps away from a metro station.
I tried the mixed grill plate and found it fresh and tasty. With olive oil on the side and bread. My plate had good portion and filled me up.
Can't wait to go back. The manager Ramazan is a nice man and was helpful despite being busy.
Wonderful experience. Next time will book a hotel within walking distance. It's...
