You may be wandering why there is a 4 stars and everything else is 5... Well I will tell you - I went there with somehow very high hopes and expectations. 4.6, relatively far away from the city center and all the tourist traps there, and a local Croatian cuisine... So what I got was a bit disappointing, but definitely delicious. And the disappointment is all because of my high expectations. I went there, a very polite staff member pointed me to a table. I went through the menu, which is very big... I saw few dishes that caught my attention but I wasn't sure. I've asked the waiter to recommend me something - a starter, salad, main and dessert with the only request to be as local cuisine as possible, because I do want to try Croatian meals. He explained that everything is homemade and it is local. And the offered me the Zvoncu steak, explaining it is big enough to not need a starter, a mixed salad and beans a side. The salad was good, tasty and with the right amount of vinegar. The star of the evening was the steak. It was absolutely delicious, made exactly as it should be - medium rare. For this I have nothing to say but superlatives. The beans - I had a lot of beans in my life, so I wasn't impressed... Beans are beans. The huge disappointment was the dessert... I've asked him for something local, instead I got a generic chocolate cake with Berry jam and cream... It was delicious, but all around me people were eating something that seems a lot better. But still it is my fault not to ask for it specifically. So final summation: delicious steak, definitely worth the money. For everything else - trust your stomach and take whatever makes it send a request to your brain. I will visit the place again and this time ask for whatever I want and I am sure my experience will be 5/5 stars. PS: The prices are a bit high... But probably it is because the place has a reputation among the locals... But...
Read moreWe went here as a group of four German tourists because we wanted to try some traditional Croatian food. As soon as we started speaking English at the entrance the waiter was annoyed. Took us about five minutes and a lot of asking to get seated. We took some time to decide what to take, ordered lemonades beforehand (which are only water with tons of lemon, no sugar!!) and then ordered after about ten minutes. It took 50 minutes until I asked when our food will be ready to serve, because our waiter just didn’t care about us. To all the other guests he was nice and considerate though. After I asked he got us the olives and ajvar, then our chevapchichi and rice which were quite cooled down aready. He also just threw it on the table, nothing else to say. We ate, payed and took an Uber to the city where people are way more friendly. The only nice thing was the Ambiente, really beautiful restaurant. Food was ok too, just cold and we felt really left out.
Would rather go do a different restaurant next time.
Nije dobar restoran za turiste!...
Read moreWell-known and beloved place among restaurant clientele in Zagreb. For foreigners it is interesting to see and taste what average Croatian really likes to eat. It is mainly meat, grilled od roasted, also on spit and in the open fire oven. There are also fine soups, I'd suggest mushroom or beef soup. Side dishes are baked potatoes and salad. Beans baked in oven could be also a good choice, also for vegetarians. Desserts are delicious, different sorts of strudel or "strukli" which could be eaten also as main course in you don+t want to overeat. Why I am giving four instead of five stars to this restaurant? First, space is cramped, hot and always full. Second, there is no style, or you could call it "rustic" which doesn't appeal to me. Third, I don't like too much this cuisine style, it is too heavy and portions are far too big for me. I understand that for many people this is definitive plus-point. Medium to higher...
