Best Sheftalia in paphos
You visit many restaurants and tavernas thinking that you have been served authentic Cypriot food then you come across a small taverna called To Vasano and realise that this is the real Cyprus. It’s a small family run taverna with tables inside and outside in a covered courtyard and a busy takeaway trade. Cars are parked everywhere as people drop in for their takeouts. Over the number of years we have visited this kebab house during our visits to the island we have seen very few tourist in there, they are missing out on a little gem.
Maroula and her team of very friendly staff who speak good English are happy to serve you homemade food at its best, the star is their homemade Sheftalia, it’s gorgeous. You can order Pita or Portions of the delicious souvlaki, sheftalia, loukaniko, grilled chicken, spare ribs and extras such as chips, boiled potatoes and salads.
Seated inside on a cool evening we ordered a Mix Portion (2 sticks of Pork souvlaki and 3 sheftalia) which was accompanied by pita, a plate of Greek style boiled potatoes and a dish of tomato, cucumber, olives, lemon, greens, pickled celery and chillies, all that for €8 . My wife ordered the chicken pita €5 and we had a portion of chips €2, the table was littered with plates of delicious food. The Pita of chicken souvlaki, tomatoes, cucumber, onion and parsley was huge, one patron was attacking his with a knife and fork. We could not remember just how good the food is in this taverna. A glass of white wine (a full water glass), bottle of water and a large Keo brought the total bill to a measly €22. We where stuffed.
The testament to this taverna is that is that over the years is has not changed, it doesn’t need too, the same décor, the same delicious food, the same value for money, the same...

The "salad" consists of whole stalks of arugula, whole cucumbers and tomatoes, pickled celery, peppers and caper leaves, olives and limes. Chop it up as a salad or eat it along with the Cypriot pita and your meats. Your call.
So simple. So perfect. A must visit if you're in the area. Closes at 5pm, so it's good for a late lunch, but no...
Read moreA very local restaurant which serves good food. I had a mixed meat pitta with chips and my partner had grilled chicken with house salad and boiled potatoes. The house salad was novel to us as you had to cut it all up yourself. It was great and the small green chilies were well hot. Worth a plate full on their own. Only downside was lack of seasoning at time of cooking. Or was it just me?? The price for this good meal, with two large beers, was 25.50...
