Reffen is a must-see when in Copenhagen. The level of food choices here is beyond imagination – kitchens from every corner of the world, all in one place. I had the Reffen Brewery IPA together with Gambian food at Baobab, and both were excellent.

The quality of the food is very good, everything feels clean and well organized, and the atmosphere is full of good vibes. Sitting by the water with a drink, trying different flavors, and just relaxing makes it a perfect spot to spend a few hours. Near the waterfront you can even grab a free chair, sit back, and watch the ships and boats pass by. In the center there’s also a skateboarding area, which makes it fun for kids and gives the whole place an extra lively, creative energy.

Reffen has an interesting history too. It sits on the grounds of the old B&W shipyard, once the heart of Copenhagen’s industrial harbor. When the shipbuilding era ended, the site was transformed into a hub for creativity and entrepreneurship. Today, it’s home not only to food stalls but also to workshops, cultural events, and street art – a place where innovation and tradition mix in a very Copenhagen way. Many stalls are run by small, independent entrepreneurs who bring their own food traditions and stories, giving the place its unique, global feel.

Getting there is easy. We took bus 2A from the main bus station next to the central train station, and it brought us here in about 30 minutes.

Another nice bonus: in the close surroundings of Reffen you’ll also find galleries and a Danish design antique shop with beautiful mid-century furniture (including Pastoe pieces) – worth a quick visit if you love design and art.

Practical tip: Reffen is open from spring through autumn (usually April to October) and generally operates from around midday until late evening. Hours can vary a little by season and day, but it’s best enjoyed on long summer evenings when you can sit by the water until the sun goes down.

Reffen is one of those places that seems too out of the way to bother with, but I can honestly say: you simply haven’t done Copenhagen unless you make it out here.

Getting to Reffen is its own adventure. For us, it was a train ride, a bus transfer across half the city, and then a walk through an industrial part of Copenhagen. It’s not the easiest route, and we left the kids at home.

Once you make it, there are endless food stalls with flavors and smells from literally every continent, and the hardest part of the evening might be choosing what you want to eat. The atmosphere is what makes Reffen truly unique. It’s lively but not chaotic; there’s plenty of space, with long communal tables and seating all around. We had an incredible evening wandering among the stalls, sampling dish after dish (the Argentinian steak sandwich stand was a real highlight), and ended up at a picnic table with a gorgeous view of the water. As the sun set, the whole market glowed with string lights—the perfect Copenhagen sendoff.
