A hidden gem that outshines the original.

Just a short walk from the famous (and crowded) Little Mermaid sits her far cooler cousin—the Genetically Modified Little Mermaid. Created by Danish artist Bjørn Nørgaard, known for his provocative and experimental works, this sculpture is part of a larger, surreal ensemble that challenges tradition and reimagines myth with a modern edge.

Surrounded by other bold pieces from Nørgaard’s “Human and Animal” series, this mermaid feels more thoughtful, more expressive, and honestly, far more interesting than the tourist-packed original.

It’s a shame she’s so overlooked—we had the entire space to ourselves. If you’re already visiting the original, it’s absolutely worth the short walk to see this clever, art-forward take.

Quiet, weird, and wonderfully...

I first found reference to the genetically modified little mermaid via Atlas obscura. This app and website compiles slightly alternative tourist attractions such as this via user generated content and displays it via an easy to use map. Music to the ears of a keen local guide.

Similar in size, scale, and design to the Hans Christian Andersen based original around the corner, visiting the genetically modified little mermaid will help you to have an aura of supremacy over your friends who may have pictures with the original on their social media or in their residence.

This is good if you are trying to cultivate an image of being an intolerable hipster, something I imagine many people taking trips to Copenhagen in general and particularly this attraction may...
