Nayroby's Comedor — Restaurant in Las Terrenas

Not sure where some of the pictures came from. A previous location? It's an outdoor bar more than a restaurant. But the menu is the one posted and had good reviews so we went. It was a mixed bag. No one spoke English. We know it's a Spanish speaking country although we've heard much more Italian and French in this area. So Google Translate it was, including finding out they don't accept credit cards only because I asked with Google Translate. The first thing I ordered they did not have. So I got fried calamari and seafood soup. The calamari was o.k. although not very hot by the time it was served. No dipping sauce of any kind. The sopa mariscos was very good. Delicious broth with lots of good things in it. Clearly homemade from scratch. My wife ordered grilled octopus. Taste was very good but it was really really tough. I'd recommend only for very strong teeth and digestive system. Atmosphere is more like an open air bar with rock music coming from a tv and smokers. I guess the smoking comes with the Italian and French clientele. Maybe the only area where the U.S. is ahead these days. If the daytime tables across the street overlooking the beach are theirs that would be a nice spot to eat or have a drink. I would rate that much higher...

Such a disappointment. After reading so many good reviews i decided to give it a try. I shouldn't have. We sat down at a very dirty table with the remains of previous costumers thinking that they would be cleaned up eventually, but no, dirty plates and glasses full of flies remained there during our meal. We had to push them to one side of the small table ourselves. Okay i thought, the food will make up for it. Was i sorely mistaken: the fried fish i received was minuscule and so bony that there was almost nothing to eat, rice was almost raw and it felt like chewing pebbles and the "salad" was comprised of a single leaf, one sad slice of pepper and an atom of broccoli. All this glorius disappointment for the friendly price of 1500 pesos for the 2 of us. I got up hungrier than i was when i sat down , but now i had flies buzzing around me and was not happy at all. Lovely experience. Our family of 10 shared a meal here. The food was delicious - the shrimp appetizer and ceviche was amazing!

For meals we had fish, the pork with mushroom sauce, octopus, and the steak - all super yummy.

It was a strange feeling eating a meal in someone’s home, but their family made us feel very welcome.
