Kanu Restaurant in Suva, Fiji, offers a pretty reasonable dining experience. Menu was a bit pricey for steak and seafood at $75 for a main meal (same as GPH prices), but the rest of the menu that sat in the $30-40 range for main meals seemed to be generally good, with a variety of options that cater to different tastes and satisfied my party of diners. Whilst not ground-breaking or overly reflective of the advertised "exploration of Fijian culture through food and drinks", the flavours were satisfying, but the freshness of our meals raised a few eyebrows in our group - all of the hand-cut chips had black streaks and discolouring throughout them and whilst safe to eat is an indication that the hand cut chips should have been tossed out ad not served to customers as they had oxidised for too long prior to cooking. The service is friendly, though it was a bit slow at times. Upon first seating we were left unattended for 30 minutes before asking the maître d' for some personalised attention. Another dining table of 10 senior local guests who I knew members of got up and left to dine elsewhere whilst I was dining as the wait for service was too long. The setting is quite unique, as it is housed in the historic former Governor's Building, lending an air of colonial charm to the atmosphere. This gives the place a sense of significance, making it a bit more special than your average restaurant. The architecture and décor inside are a blend of contemporary style with a touch of history, which is quite appealing. One notable convenience is the parking at the rear, which makes it much easier to access the restaurant without having to worry about finding street parking. Overall, Kanu Restaurant provides a pleasant experience with a nice atmosphere, reasonable food, and a historical setting, but there’s room for improvement in service speed and food freshness. Still, it's definitely worth a visit, especially for those interested in experiencing a piece of Suva’s history while...
Read moreOverall, food bad, service okay, garnish bad. VERY OVERPRICED. NOT RECOMMENDED.
First of all, the female staff were really kind and professional. On the other hand, one male staff who'd been working at that location for a long time needed staff training - felt a bit of racism, irresponsibpe and lacked professionalism. Our food was service first and we had to ask for our cuterlies, was asked to leave before a certain time (even before we ordered) because the table was reserved - there were seats available outside - and I had to ask 3 times for our water to be served.
Second of all, the food was VERY DISAPPOINTING. I had ordered: Lemongrass Spatchcook Chicken: It was served with salad - which tasted like food waste - and chicken which was very dry and had no sauce (I want to know why they used the word Lemongrass in the menu, cause I couldn't taste it). Personally, I thought the roasted chicken from Newworlds tasted better. Heavenly Beef: This was just Chopsuey. Very Average. Valolo Fish of the Day: I personally thought this was the best of thw menus we'd ordered. Fish was tender, sauce tasted nice, too. Nasigoreng (Fried Rice): This was bad. Not even average - I don't understand how anyone could fail to make fried rice - especially at a renowned restaurant.
When I was having the meal I had thought that somewhere in the middle of cooking the food, the chef had skipped a step in the receipe - that this taste was a mistake.
However, when I had asked if the main chef, Lance Steeto was in the kitchen, the server told me that he was in there checking and putting all the food together. So, he is aware of how the food tastes.......
