This was the most memorable food experience on Denarau Island for me! Friends and I were tired of resort food (yet again) so booked a table for the three of us. We didn't know but Tuesdays seemed to be Fiji night so there was a lovo buffet and an entertainment group doing a selection of meke (traditional Fijian dance). I had such a great night. Lovo was delish (I made two rounds it was that good) and the meke livened up the restaurant. Good location and easily accessible on the Bula Bus. Wait staff could have been much more attentive and the dessert at the buffet was missing other key local desserts such as custard pie and Fijian pudding. I did like the coconut cake that was on offer though and there was another dessert that I didn't have room for. I would certainly go back for the lovo and I suppose I'll try the Mexcian menu next time too.
Well I tried it as I was back in Nadi for a wedding and went here for lunch with a friend. Ordered the Macho Nachos and it was alright - nothing to write home about really and the sour cream was quite terrible basically melted to a liquid on the nachos. Not sure what happened there. I loved that I could order fresh coconut water with my lunch so I was quite pleased about this. Went back recently for the buffet lovo night (on Tuesdays) on my trip recently and took my family. The kumala salad was SO good and was my favourite of all the salads. Also liked the seafood salad too. I think the palusami was a bit disappointing as it wasn't made with fresh coconut milk and same for the kokoda. I didn't like the gravy with the roast at all - it didn't look or taste like it was made from scratch. I think pineapple or a custard pie (with condensed milk of course) is missing from the dessert table. But I did really like the vudi dessert. The highlight for me was the fish vakalolo (would be even better with fresh coconut milk though) and my...
Read moreIf staying in Nadi or Port Denarau and you're craving North American cuisine from Mexico, then visiting Mamacita is a must. Since this restaurant is not ran by Mexicanos, some of the services expected or anticipated in a typical Mexican restaurant are missing, such as chips and salsa served immediately upon arrival, request for pinto or black beans whenever served, and the easy convertibility into virgin drinks (mocktails are offered instead in a limited menu and are not included in happy hour). No live Mariachi perform (as this is in Fiji and I'm sure little to none Mariachi live on Viti Levu), however they do play recorded traditional Mexican music.
We ordered Fajitas and requested they come split with beef and chicken (this combination is not listed on the menu, but they did it unobliging). Although the menu does not say, the fajitas come with sour cream, salsa verde, guacamole, salsa con tomate, and shredded slaw. Shredded cheese is not served as a side but is melted on the fajitas. And boy, the fajitas are muy sabrosas! If desired, they have habanero salsa imported from the Yucatan, El Yucatero, and bottles come in verde, rojo, and xxx caliente.
Since we previously decided to order dessert, we enjoyed the Aztec Treasure chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Wow, the double layer slice is large and completely covered with a chocolate salsa and not too sweet. The vanilla ice cream, and cream with mint were an excellent pairing.
We complimented the chef in Spanish before we left, and told him the translation, as Spanish is not a widely spoken language in Fiji. Do come and try, and hopefully your experience will be just as...
Read moreThe food was average, enchiladas were very small and kids quesadilla dry and bland. Margarita was a highlight, the best I've had in Fiji, and the service was quick... Once I'd managed to flag down a member of staff willing to table my order, as there appeared to be no desire to want to take my table's order, as we were merely a table of 2, so larger tables were taking precedence, or so it seemed.
The most disappointing bit of it all, and reason for the 2 star rating is that despite calling and booking a table 7hrs in advance, and seeing the staff confirm my booking upon my arrival, we found that they had not reserved a table for us and instead we got given the crappest table in the joint. Right on the thoroughfare for people being seated and right next to the buffet. 270 degrees of hustle and bustle, and banging of our chairs, throughout our meal. We couldn't get out of there fast enough!
Very...
