Disappointed by the Way Locals Are Treated – A Sad Experience at Big Bula Water Park
We were really excited to visit Bula Water Park, especially since we were bringing my mum along for a fun family day out. However, our experience at check-in was honestly disappointing and disheartening.
At the counter, we asked for the local spectator rate for my mum, based on the information we received earlier in Denarau. My mum is a Fijian citizen, permanently resides in Fiji and presented her Fiji passport, which is her only form of ID. To our surprise, we were told that a Fiji passport is not accepted as proof of being a local. When we asked why, the staff member replied that it’s “company policy” because some people hold dual passports, which we understand to some extent. However, the explanation doesn’t entirely hold up — many people with dual passports permanently reside in their home countries. A passport is still a valid and official national document.
When asked where we were staying, we told the staff the name of the place — which is my mum’s residence. That’s when both the security guard and the staff member started laughing at us, while other tourists were standing right behind us in the queue. It felt insulting, humiliating, and extremely rude.
I asked, “Why are you laughing? What’s funny about staying at a local residence instead of a hotel?” Were they laughing because they thought we were lying? That’s nothing short of judgmental and disrespectful.
We were unable to get the names of the two employees involved, but I will send through the receipt and time we were served via Instagram for reference. I sincerely hope management takes this seriously, because this kind of behaviour reflects very poorly on the park.
It’s extremely sad to see that locals are treated with less respect than overseas tourists — as if we’re not important. Locals still pay, even at a discounted rate. That doesn’t make us any less deserving of basic dignity and respect.
This kind of partiality and unprofessional behavior is unacceptable. We love our country and support local businesses — but being treated like second-class citizens at a public attraction is...

Visited this park last week with family. If you’re from any western country you would know immediately that this park is substandard in terms of safety. You’re certainly going to this park at your own risk as there are nobody there to guide you in terms of safety and the level of intensity of the rides. I broke my toe coming down the slide smashing to another person who had already landed in the water. There was nobody there to notice this to begin with or to approach us to see if we are ok. When my husband ran to the office asking for a wheelchair or some help there was non available and the lady at the counter had shown no interest whatsoever and told him he needs to catch a taxi to get to the hotel ( no help offered to get me to the entrance to get to the taxi even) she carried on signing other people in! It is a long way to the entrance and I was limping and were assisted by my husband and a 12 year old who was in charge of carrying all the bags we had! Two staff members walk past us while we were struggling to get to the entrance in that heat and literally walked past us.
I am not being a princess about this experience. In such a high risk environment for accidents the facility should firstly offer some help or have the basic facility to ensure help is provided to the injured person, wheelchair is a MUST to be kept in this facility.
We would never ever go back to this park as it’s extremely unsafe, you would be left on your own if anything happens to you that’s why they get you to sign a consent form before you enter the facility, no where in that form is mentioned that “ we actually don’t care if something happens to you” but you’ll find that out yourselves. Will not recommend this...

I can only assume the good reviews on here are paid and fake. You would have to be delusional to give this place 5 stars.
I have formally reported this waterpark to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission for serious and ongoing breaches of health and safety standards. Other families should think very carefully before coming here.
My daughter fell down a dangerous set of stairs—slippery, unguarded, and completely unsafe. There was no signage, no grip surface, and no supervision. When I raised this with staff and warned them that someone could be seriously injured or killed, they smiled. I asked, “Has anyone died here?” and was told, “Not yet.” That alone is appalling.
Worse still, when I expressed how serious the situation was, they lied and claimed no one had ever complained before—but a quick look at online reviews shows that other guests have raised serious safety concerns over time. The dishonesty is as disturbing as the negligence.
The pools at the bottom of the inflatables were in terrible condition—either chemically overloaded or outright filthy. The water was cloudy, smelled awful, and caused irritation to my daughter’s eyes and skin. This isn’t just poor maintenance; it’s a health risk.
And it’s not even cheap. The place is wildly overpriced, charging a premium for conditions that are frankly unsafe and unacceptable.
This is not just disappointing—it’s dangerous and dishonest. I hope the authorities take swift action before the “not yet” becomes reality. In the meantime, stay far away...
