Pub Old Mates — Restaurant in Tampere sub-region

The star of the show was undoubtedly the fish & chips. Having tried this classic dish in various places, and the sucker that I am for Fish & Chips I can confidently say that what I had here was exceptional. And not only in Finland but even in the UK 🇬🇧 this Fish & Chips can compete with any. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside, yet delightfully tender and flaky within. Paired with golden, crunchy chips and a great tartar sauce that added just the right tang, it was a memorable meal that set a new benchmark for me.

But the culinary delights didn't stop there. The beer selection was a pleasant surprise, showcasing an impressive range of local and international brews. Each beer was expertly described by the friendly staff, who were more than happy to provide recommendations based on my preferences. Whether you're a beer aficionado or just looking to try something new, this pub has got you covered.

What truly set this pub apart, however, was the warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff were not only knowledgeable but also genuinely friendly, contributing to an overall experience that was as comforting as it was satisfying.

In summary, this pub in Tampere is a gem that offers much more than just great food and drinks. It's one of those places that deserves a 5+

While this isn't quite a real English pub, it makes a valiant attempt with its selection of beers on tap. I'm told the fish and chips were excellent, plus they serve a full English, although I've yet to try either. I had the smash burger and it was great.

It was packed for the champions league final, but there seemed to be loads of TV screens. The terrace was also a reasonable size, but being beside a busy road wasn't the greatest.

Still, the name made me smile since Mates are a brand of condom in the UK!

2nd visit: Sat inside this time and enjoyed the non-stop British music - Great playlist! We also played some of the games available - sorry to those around us disturbed by the crashing jenga towers :D

Yritin ensi kertaa tilata ruokaa, jotain niinkin iisiä kuin ranskalaiset. Pyysin jättämään majoneesin pois kananmuna-allergikkona, se talon majoneesi kun on Hellmann'sin majoa. Se onnistui, mutta kun kysyin paistoöljystä niin sain kuulla että sinne menee kaikki friteerattavat ja halusin tietää mitä sinne sitten menee. Kokki ei osannut sanoa??? Kysyin kananmunasta ja maapähkinästä, jolloin hän vain alkoi hokemaan ettei voida luvata, ei voida luvata, vaikka yritin sanoa väliin, että "saattaa sisältää" -lauseke ei tapauksessani haittaa, en tarvitse epipeniä vaan tulee vatsanväänteitä ja iho-oireita jos näitä löytyy ruuasta. Myöhemmin katsoin ruokalistaa ja sieltä löytyi friteerattavia asioita 4 tai 5. Kokki siis ei viitsinyt listata näin pientä määrää asioita eikä muutenkaan varmistaa allergeeneja. Ostin siis pettyneenä vain kalliin juoman enkä toista tilannut enkä tilaa jatkossakaan. Ymmärrän että kyseessä on pubi, mutta heidän sivuillaan kerrotaan, että allergeeneista saa lisätietoa henkilökunnalta. No eipä vissiin saa.

Tunnelmasta kolme tähteä, sillä ainakin bingojen aikaan tunnelma on mahtava, mutta sen luovat bingon pitäjät, ei ravintola itse. Muuten meno on aika perus pubi, opiskelijoita sekä vanhempaa ryyppäävää porukkaa siellä aika rauhallisesti seikkailee, välillä örisevät uhkaavastikin. Musiikki ei yleensä soi liian kovaa, mutta välillä se häiritsee vaikka kello on vasta neljä iltapäivällä ja väkeä vain...
