This is a hard one to write. The restaurant has so much potential. Heck, it's recommended by Michelin as a great place to eat for under âŹ40 per person.
I'm not going to be one of those who only complains about the service. There are loads of other people doing that here, and we should have heeded their advice. But we didn't, and they were proven right.
We went there for the âŹ33 menu. A reasonable amount of money to spend on a relaxed evening. The meal itself was nice. My starter (a focaccia with tomatoes and olive oil) was amazing. It was one of the best dishes I've eaten on my trip here, and we've been to some bloody good restaurants. It's the only thing giving the second star in this review.
My fiancée's starter was nice, but not spectacular. The mains were OK, pedestrian, but OK. No complaints here, but I won't go out of my way to recommend them.
My dessert was good, too. As good as you'd expect at a regular restaurant. But my fiancée's had mouldy strawberries in it. A big, big no-no from me.
The service, I must admit, was abject. Three people were trying to cope with a massive number of tables. They were hapless, they were slow, they kept forgetting us. It was a joke, and most of the people around us took it as such. The place is pleasant and we just enjoyed our wine while we waited. They even forgot our dessert completely and only brought it out after we reminded them that we had been waiting for it for over 40 minutes. At least they brought us a glass of champagne as an apology, we really appreciated that.
But I can't hold that against them. I'm writing the review to warn others, not in spite. The staff were doing their absolute best, and they were clearly not coping. Some tables around us just up and left before even getting their order in.
Overall coming to a conclusion for rating this restaurant was very hard.
I'd say -
Avoid this place at all cost!!
We got the name of the place from our guide book by Rick Steves, and saw the 3.5 star score on google. Unfortunately we decided to gave it a try. It was the worst meal anywhere in many years and many countries for close to $100!!!
We chose the $32 menu. The green beans and tomatoes appetizers, fish (cod) and veal mains, and lemon pie, tiramisu dessert. Everything was below par. The green beans and the veal dishes were eatable. Others were tolerable for one or two bites. The fish dish had a horrible smell that was nauseating.
It is hard to believe that this is owned by the same operator as the restaurant next door which is Michelin 2 star. We believe this A Cote is a place the owner / chef peddles the leftovers from the â2 star placeâ and uses all the ingredients thatâs rotten or ready to be thrown away by the rich brother.
The tail tell or concrete evidence is that the wait staff never ever asked how was the food during any of the three coursesâ guilty at least.
The fish dish was so bad that I had to put it on the next table because of the foul smell. pictures are so deceptive!!
Second day follow up: both of us came down with diarrhea starting in the morning. We shared dishes from...
Read moreSuper horrible bistro. Almost unbelievable. Cannot understand from what they get 32âŹ.
There came out a plastic hair of syrup brush from my dessert(Amandine pie), the staff insisted to me itâs a solid syrup. When I said it is not, they said itâs JUST a part of brush so I CAN KEEP EATING.(WHAT????) Even not with a single word of âsorryâ or suggestion of refund.
Secondly they just forgot our coats that they took when we entering, and finally,, rejected to receive 100⏠money because it can be a faulty one.(WHAT????????) They even didnât say it frankly, said âwe donât have a changeâ. Hello, we have eaten 70⏠amount!!
I think the owner has to think about from the philosophy of âwhat is restaurantâ again. Please understand what is service.
Recommend use your precious time in more valuable places in lovely Arles. There are a lot except...
