L'Epica — Restaurant in Bastia

A young enthusiast just recently opened this charming family restaurant. It’s found just on top of several touristy restaurants in Bastia’s old harbour. L’Epica has everything to become on of Bastia’s hidden gems! The head chef (and owner’s mother) cooks delicious fresh food. I had the sardines, prepared with a locally produced cottage cheese, accompanied with fine vegetables and potatoes. My partner enjoyed her ravioli with that same cottage cheese (Brousse) very much. Everything was well balanced. The front of house was very polite and had excellent product knowledge. Not too afraid to go against my initial choice and recommend the sardines, which I had overlooked on the menu, though! Proudly he told us how he did all the furnishing and paintwork himself, and what a great job he did. The place looks authentic, yet fresh and modern. When in the port of Bastia, look beyond the facade of large terraces and restaurants, climb a few steps and enjoy your lunch or dinner in this fabulous young place, that is already full of character. The worst meal we had in corsica so far, we order red wine, mussels, the octopus salad and the sardines, almost everything was disappointing. The wine came tasting vinegary, we asked for a change and he brought back the same wine. The mussels were the smallest i have ever seen, smaller than a nail, they came in a plate for snails and the holes were bigger than them. The octopus salad came like a normal salad (lettuce, cherry tomatoes..) with canned octopus. Not a big portion either very underwhelming for the 16€ they charged for it but not less underwhelming than the 13.5€ baby mussels with more breadcrumbs in them than mussel. L‘ Epica is Family run and serves local special foods which we really enjoyed. Don‘t miss the catch of the day, the various entree possibilities and the Corsican desserts - fabulous. All served without hussle, with style and good explanations on the food menue. You can take the house wine options, we‘ve had Rose and red and both were tasty and could convince!...
