Le Bistrot des Halles — Restaurant in Bayonne

We came for dinner and as soon as we asked for a table the first waiter that approached us was rude - he made a gesture that meant “wait” and didn’t say a word. He passed by us back and forward many many times without saying a word and after some long wait (even though they had plenty of free tables on the inside), a waitress came to lead us to the table without saying much or being sympathetic. We ordered the entrecôte and the codfish. Both plates were ok but not great as some of the reviews made us think. The fries were a bit soggy, we asked for the meat to be cooked rare and it was medium-well. The cod was a bit cold and lacked a bit of salt. Overall the food was ok but not worth more than 3 stars. The only really positive aspect of it is that the portions are quite big. The service was awful and we could feel the difference between serving foreigners and French people - it’s not ok. The food was good but the service really not welcoming! It is sad that when you are a foreigner that you get treated in a different way, French people are welcomed with a smile and when I paid, I said good evening, thank you and I didn’t even receive a look or a goodbye back. I was sat at the bar and was told the restaurant is full, meanwhile a few minutes later another person came also without reservation and got a proper table to sit at. A dinner is about having a comfortable and welcoming evening alone or in a group and not only about the food. We selected this restaurant specifically because of the latest two reviews and the score on Google. We found that none of this is true. The taste and quality is below average. The lamb tasted ok, but was just bones and fat! The duck was dry and the fries were soggy and tasteless ! The small portion of vegetables was ok. What disturbed us the most that the kitchen was not busy and the cooks were taking smoking breaks right in front of our table… so was the waitress.
