Restaurant L'ange des mers — Restaurant in Calvi

Something nefarious is afoot here. Either majority of reviewers have incredibly low standards, which I doubt is the case, or the positive reviews are paid for. Or as one reviewer pointed out, the restaurant was sold and the positive reviews for the previous owners and location were part of the sale. The location in the hills by a pool is not the current location.

I wouldn’t be as bummed about the experience if we hadn’t just spent a week in Corsica by van, cooking simple meals(far better than the one we had here), and chosen this place as our special, and expensive, treat to end the vacation. It is the lie they peddle of being a local catch fishery and restaurant that really gets me. Nothing here is locally sourced or handmade. Handmade pasta shows the hand in the making, with imperfections to the finished product. The raviolis were positively, factory perfect in a way only a machine could achieve. Deciding between the linguini, maybe the risotto, or the aforementioned ravioli? Don’t fret the decision and just close your eyes and point to one because they all taste the same, swathed in a presumably canned bisque, heavy on cream. We skipped dessert because I saw store bought berry sauce being squeezed onto a plate on the way back from the bathroom. Come on! Fruit, sugar, lemon juice and 10 minutes at the stove and you have a homemade berry sauce!

€18 for a fritto with no misto, just 3 headless shrimp and 3 small accras served with thai chile sauce from a jar. We hit the ground running off the ferry and toward fritto misto on the boardwalk of Cagnes Sur Mer today in an attempt to redeem last night’s miserable experience and were rewarded with a heaping pile of squid, octopus, head-on shrimp, and fishes large and small with homemade sauce tartare, for a mere €10 more and with a better view than the backs of fishing boats offered at L’Ange des Mer.

Just be a subpar restaurant attracting passersby on the bay and leave it that. But please stop deceiving people into believing they are reserving an authentic experience. It’s an embarrassment to you and Corsican food culture. Have some integrity and pride.

Two stars because the young staff were very nice and attentive. I assume they’re all young because no self-respecting adult would put up with the attitude of the chef who would, on occasion, pop out of the kitchen to chide guests. ...

To be short - don’t go if you expect a good fish restaurant, because it’s not. Price/ quality ratio for me is 5/1.

The staff are all very nice and helpful, but the level of the kitchen for the fish restaurant is quite poor, especially for the price. Lots of easy restaurants at the beach are making it way better. I’m really surprised how can you cook a fresh fish so badly, the best plate we had was a veal meat plate.

Second big thing - it is not the same restaurant as at the photos, there is no pool, no garden and no family run hotel. It’s the same owners who took an account of their previous restaurant/ hotel and set up a new restaurant under the same Google account, which means they kept all previous marks and reviews, you can read it in reviews. The website is not corresponding to this restaurant neither. To me it is a scam and perhaps should be reported.

Still the new restaurant itself is not bad and quite nice, but it is completely different from the photos posted by the owner.

And the third big comment is about the toilet. I’m sorry, but you cannot have a “pretending” restaurant and at the same time only one mini toilet of 1.5 square meters (for at least 25 tables), not accessible for a people taller than 1.70m or bigger than a size M without problems and with a heat of at least 40 degrees with a poor ventilation. And a hand fan which is switching on itself just because you’re moving to wash your hands, not even saying about how people with a limited mobility can use it (like our grandma yesterday), come on that’s a shame.

So if you want to spend 50-70€ per person better go somewhere else. Thank you for reading it...

First of all the location is perfect, at one end of the port. Dine alfresco or just inside a partially enclosed area. Best glass of champagne I've had in Corsica. Soupe de Poissons was delicious, a little reminiscent of our she-crab soup in the US. My son loved the fish tartare. The owner (I think) was very jovial with me and has a ton of charisma and charm. She presented the live spiny lobster I would have with my linguine. It slapped its tail and splashed me. Also had a card showing the fish species. My son chose scorpion fish over grouper. It was prepared on a skewer with chunks of saucisse in-between. Really loved the white wine by the glass. Very aromatic and fragrant, florid yet smooth and not too sweet or overpowering. Perfect with the lobster. A very nice limoncello to finish. What's not to love? Considering the quality of food and dining experience, a very affordable meal, too. Cute cotton lobster bib....
