A Funtana — Restaurant in Corte

After reading previous reviews we had some expectations. However, this restaurant ended being quite an average place, food and service wise. We shared a salad as a starter. It was OK but did not have the finesse that we’ve found in many other restaurants in Corsica. There was some sand in the lettuce that was obviously not washed properly. For the mains my partner had the lamb that was tender but too salty, nothing special. My main dish was a veal chop that was tough and lacked salt. I had to ask the waiter for salt and pepper to improve it a bit. Lamb and veal are two signature dishes in Corsica and this restaurant managed to present them in a very mediocre way. Two memorable things from dinner were one waiter filling up a jug of cool water from the fountain (delicious water!) before putting it on our table. The other was the first time in my life that I order a steak and the waiter does not ask for my cooking preference and instead forces his own. I cannot recommend this place for their average performance last night. We spent €89 for two, sharing a starter, no dessert...

We ended up in Corte outside of “dinner hours” and found this restaurant based on the promising reviews. The atmosphere was cozy, and the waiter was friendly, he assured us that it was possible to have dinner earlier (we arrived at 5:30 PM, while most restaurants usually start serving dinner at 7). However, we waited over an hour for our food (we got it closer to 7, so it’s unclear what the point was :))) and the food itself was just okay, nothing special, pretty average, mediocre. It’s really unclear what all the glowing reviews are based on. As I’m writing this, we’ve been sitting here waiting for the bill for 20 minutes:) so I figured I might as well use this time to leave...

Very good restaurant at an ideal place: the tables are installed around a large fountain on a small square shadowed by a large tree, which is quite refreshing on a hot summer day, and just 5 minutes from the Corte's citadel at the heart of the old city. The menu is not quite large but those courses I tried were excellent. I recommend the veal sauté with olives and also the fondant au chocolat, although the waiter would rather see me choose the hazelnut cake instead! Service is also good and friendly.
