Maison Gathi — Restaurant in Le Mans

Doesn't merit the high rating on Google maps IMHO. I ate on a Sunday which is a plus point given few other restaurants in the old town are open. But it wasn't a great experience. I sat in a draughty corridor reserved for parties of two, with zero ambience (other than wonklily arranged 24hrs race pictures on the adjoining wall).

The food was not up to expectations, and strangely served. The expensive (14 euros) entree of Saint Jacques was served with basically raw Jerusalem artichokes. Try eating a raw bit of jerusalem artichoke to see what that tastes like. To be fair they were advertised as "croquant", but neither the taste nor the texture nor the eating experience were in any way pleasant .

The main veal dish was overwhelmed by a mountain of tasteless mashed potato in a weird steep-sided dish that made cutting the meat pointlessly difficult. In every sense this compared poorly with the absolutely excellent meal I had at the Auberge de 7 plats the night before, which also included Saint Jacques with - expertly cooked - Jerusalem artichokes. And the Gathi meal cost 25% more for 2 courses than the auberge for 3.

On the plus side, service was charming, and the food arrived very fast, (which tells its own story).

Overall, it's very probably the only game in town on a Sunday night. On the other hand, if you have to eat in Le Mans I would choose another night, and...

Avis très très mitigé par rapport à ce restaurant dont on m'avait dit beaucoup de bien...Nous avons pris l'entrecôte et le magret de canard. La présentation de l'entrecôte est très "sommaire" avec juste un petit ramequin de sauce accompagnant la viande dans le contenu de l'assiette... pour 31€ le plat, on peut s'attendre à une présentation moins "chiche", un peu plus travaillée en termes de présentation... la cuisson est passable, l'entrecôte étant assez fine (en 2 morceaux), on se retrouve rapidement avec une viande à point quand on la demande saignante. Le magret n'est pas copieux et quasi à point quand on le demande rosé, encore un raté de cuisson (nous n'étions pourtant pas très nombreux dans le restaurant)... En vin nous avons pris le Bordeaux "Cadet de Ponty" 2020, très bon petit vin à 27€ pour accompagner nos viandes. Nous avons terminé notre repas avec le Merveilleux au café et une assiette de fromage... Le Merveilleux est très bon en revanche l'assiette de fromage est vraiment à éviter... 5 morceaux de fromage dont 2 à pate très très dure ! seuls le roquefort et le chèvre s'en sortent avec les honneurs. Ambiance globale sympathique quoique devenue très bruyante en fin de repas à l'arrivée d'un groupe de 6 personnes. Service bienveillant dont on ne sait pas trop ce que deviennent les retours faits au regard des cuissons des viandes... Bref, ardoise totale à plus de 120€ à 3. Nous étions curieux de découvrir, nous sommes ressortis avec un "mouais bof". De l'avis général, nous n'y retournerons...

Two stars for the service and the drinks, the food however was not good. Fish was room temperature, the artisjok was a bitter kick in the face and half of it not eatable ( literally, totally butchered). The ravioli was just bad tasting, no harmony in the tastes and so little ( looked like a starter), but maybe that was just as well. Be warned, the bad reviews were right, we doubted them...
