The context: it's located in the centre of Lille amongst lots of other restaurants. There always seems to be a queue out front without much being visible from street-level. Through the window, you can spy the bar piled high with bottles of spirits. The menu is Italian with most dishes having a modern spin on the traditional.
The pros: the food was genuinely tasty. We had a Margherita pizza, pasta stuffed with butternut squash in a sage butter and a lasagna. All three dishes were served promptly and were tasty. We were also given bread on the side which we enjoyed.
The cons: the service is terrible. First off, the queue outside the door is completely artificial: long lines outside are the result of slow and obtuse service. Even if you have a booking, the rude front of house staff insist you have to wait in line rain or shine. Once at the front, the man will struggle to find your name even when you literally spell it out to him. He will offer no apology once you show him the email receipt and he is suddenly able to find your name on the list.
Second, the staff inside are friendly enough and they're very quick to ask you to quote their name and leave a Google review. Unfortunately, their enthusiasm doesn't mean they actually know anything about the menu. A case in point: they have some house beers that all come from the same local brewery. The menu simply lists them as double IPA, blonde and triple. There is no name listed and no ABV. Upon asking for these rather simple details the waiting staff will shrug their shoulders and tell you 'It's just the house beer'. I have checked and not listing - or even knowing the ABV - is...

Read moreTerribly disappointed. We arrived on time for reservation, were seated in an empty room right next to two other diners? Why? There was plenty of room for the hour we were there. 1) complicated QR code menu system, with having to connect to their internet to then access an extensive menu on your tiny device? Why? We did ask for a paper menu 2) ordered a starter to test. Veal ravioli with a coagulate sauce. Clearly had been sitting in its sauce on a countertop somewhere so not freshly sauced. 3) ordered a side salad and was served a bowl of pieces of frise and iceberg lettuce. Brown lettuce, not fresh, not cleaned, no dressing not even a bit of olive oil, no other “salad” ingredients. I asked for it to be removed from the check. 4) partner had the osso bucco, two bones on a bed of runny polenta #lousy 5) practically every ceramic item on the table (dishes, candleholders, saucers, were chipped). This careless/ cheapness follows through on the ill tasting food. 6) had enough at this point and decided to go. Told to pay via QR code and the check that came up on the iPhone wasn't even ours and was for much more than we ordered. This threw the waiter off and he let us pay via his hand held. With so many “off” points I won’t be recommending this place. €48 for two...
