Having not visited Lyon before I really wanted to try one their many famous Bouchon’s and try traditional Lyonnaise cuisine. We went to Notre Maison in the heart of the Old Quarter situated in the beautiful cobbled streets a stones throw from Place du Change. I was not disappointed. The restaurant was full of rustic charm. Photographs covered the yellow walls, saucepans strung from the wooden beams. The red tables finished off the rustic decor and charm.
Our waiter (Stephane) realised quickly we weren’t French and explain in perfect English that the menu was made up of hearty, dishes and if you are looking for lots of green vegetables and salads this was not the place to eat. He also mentioned to we better have empty stomachs.
The menu pays homage to different pork dishes, hearty, slow cooked, and filling. We started with Rosette de Lyon (a plate of saucisson) and Gateau de foie Volaille (Chicken liver cake - a chicken liver mousse like pâté covered in a rich tomato sauce). It was really unique and absolutely delicious. The sauce was mopped up with the warm crusty freshly made baguette.
There were 5 mains only on the menu which is always a good indication that chef knows what they are doing with each dish. We decided to try Rouleau de Cochon (a large piece of pork, slow cooked in red wine with potatoes and carrot). The pork was so melt in the mouth tender and the rich wine sauce complimented it perfectly balancing the fat on the meat.
Sabodet aux Lentilles (A sausage cooked for 5 hours in red wine and Lentils). Big chunks of sausage in Rich, hearty, rustic lentils/ sauce. Delicious.
Boudin Noir a la crème (Black pudding sausage with crushed potatoes). The black pudding sausage was perfectly seasoned and again melt in the mouth
The dishes were absolutely lovely but filling. Although we were quite full we had to try the deserts. We went for house speciality “Tarte Praline” with a healthy dollop of crème fraiche. Again delicious and definitely worth trying.
I highly recommend visiting Notre Maison. The atmosphere/ ambience was great. The service was excellent and most importantly the food was delicious. Definitely go if you like pork, stews, slow cooked hearty traditional food and definitely go on an...
Read moreI am visiting Lyon and wanted to try food at this restaurant coz Google suggests that it's good. However I did not manage to eat there at all as the waitress in this restaurant is really rude. when I walked in telling her that I was by myself she gave a really nasty expression as if it was a really big issue. She then pointed me to a table at the corner, threw the menu onto the table then left without asking if I needed anything. I then sat there for like 15 mins and no one came to serve. When she happened to look at my way I raised my hand, she saw me and did came to my direction but right when she was in front of me, she turned away to another empty table, which made no sense as no one was there for her to serve. She walked again in front of me and I called her, she pretended not to hear anything and kept walking away, and only responded when I called 3 times. When she walked to me again it was that nasty expression on her face again also, I then asked if you have any English menu, she just said no, short and harsh, did not even offer to help translate. I said ok I cannot eat here then, she just said ok and picked up the menu then left, with the arrogant/pissed off expression on her face at all times and without any word to say sorry for not having English menu. Nothing to the customer service standard and I feel sorry for the owner that he has this stupid waitress serving at his restaurant, as he is losing one potential customer here, and from my true experience, I am warning all the other people going to try this place to be careful of meeting this waitress. If need to confirm the detailed information I'm happy to assist, it is the waitress worked there in the evening...
Read moreA nice classic Lyonnaise Bouchon. Reservations are recommended and can be made via phone. On a February Monday night around 8:30 pm, the restaurant was about half full. We ordered: roasted pigs feet (pied de cochon) , rouleau de cochon poitrine de porc (pork belly roll), andouillette ficelle, and tarte praline for dessert. They have a €35 menu, and you can add more a la carte. We got 1 menu and 1 plat, which was a perfect portion size. The plats don't look huge, but they're filling. It also included a digestive at the end - the waitress just handed us a bottle of alcohol. Awesome.
The roasted pigs feet were good, but you gotta eat them before they get cold. Not a ton of meat, but good.
The rouleau de cochon was very good and came with a tasty sauce, carrot and potatoes.
The andouillette ficelle (pork tripe sausage) was surprisingly tasty. The waitress warned us it would have a strong flavor and be chewy, but we decided to be adventurous. It tasted like farm and sausage, but in a good way. Most was tender, and the rest was a bit chewy. The sauce from the rouleau de cochon was helpful for finishing the last of it.
For dessert, of course we had to get the praline tart. It was a sizable piece, delicious, with some sour cream served from a milk jug (as much as you want!) to balance the sweetness. We finished off the meal with a digestive for a great end...
