El Chivito Montpellier, Cuisine D’Amérique Latine — Restaurant in Montpellier

As a tourist, I decided to visit this restaurant because of the good ratings it had received on Google. However, my experience was extremely disappointing. Unfortunately, my meal not only left a lot to be desired, but was far from good. The flavors were bland and the presentation was sloppy. I was shocked at the lack of attention to detail in each dish that was served. Also, to make matters worse, when I finished my meal, I was met with roaches. This was an extremely unpleasant and unprofessional experience. I cannot understand how a place with good online ratings can afford to maintain such unsanitary conditions. My visit to this restaurant was a huge disappointment. The bad service, the lack of hygiene, the low quality food and the presence of cockroaches were factors that completely ruined my experience. El Chivito is a cosy little restaurant in a somewhat alternative street (amongst the cannabis shops and such), but the ambiance is great. We had the degustation menu for 2 persons, but it was way to small for us, especially compared to the price of €30. Aside from that, the food was very delicious. I can also recommend the caipirinha.

Service however was slow, we had to explicitly ask if we could order after waiting for 10 mimutes while the waitress repeatedly walked past our table and ignoring us (next to us only 1 other table was occupied). When the plate was served, we still hadn't gotten any cutlery and had to ask again.

We came to this restaurant by chance as we forgot to make a reservation elsewhere on a Friday night. As a Brit and a German from London we didnt expect much from a central American restaurant in a tourist spot (there are so many bad central American restaurants, specifically Mexican, in London) but were pleasantly surprised. My friend's steak plate was very good and the vegetarian empanadas were very "french" to my palate (excellent cheese filling, not the rubbery cheddar one might get in London).
