La Stoa — Restaurant in Nice

We made a reservation and went into the restaurant with very high expectations.

We were seated quickly, outside, at a very nice table. The restaurant was quiet, 4-5 other tables were seated. I think they forgot about us because after receiving the menus and waiting 25 minutes, I had to go inside to ask them if we could order. We didn't receive an apology or explanation though, and we could see that all the other tables were getting excellent service. We then had a different waiter, who was very nice and attentive after that.

We had the oysters which were very nice and as expected. After that, we had the côte de boeuf, the butcher selection to share. The portion was generous, but very unevenly cooked. I understand given the large size thag the cook will not be even across the piece but the majority of it was medium well to well done, while we asked for medium rare. We had the smoked version which tasted nice but only stuck to a small part of the meat, leaving the rest bland.

We’re shocked we were able to get a reservation here on the same day, and we were extremely lucky we did. The sea bass for 2 was incredible, the sides were amazing (and perfectly cooked which is tricky with green beans, broccoli, and carrots) and the service and atmosphere were top notch. I used to love La Stoa—our visit last year (2024) was truly memorable. Unfortunately, this year’s experience was very different.

The service was acceptable… but only just. For the price we paid, the food was surprisingly mediocre. The vegetables were bland, and the main dish was underwhelming. Overall, it felt like poor value, and I won’t be coming back.
