We stopped there last Saturday as the board outside said "sardines grillées - 23 euros" (for the non-french speaking, it means "grilled sardines"). We asked before sitting down how big the grilled sardines were and how many we would get. The waiter confidently said they were normal size (showing us with his hands).
We were served fried minuscule sardines (so small you could think they're whitebait but anyway). I waived at the waiter, told him the size was not what he showed us, and that these were not grilled but fried.
To our complete disbelief, he proceeded to say "these are grilled madam, we put a little bit of oil in a pan and cooked them as such". So they are fried sir, completely drenched in oil. I grew up by the sea, eating grilled sardines my whole life, so let me tell you sir, these are not grilled sardines.
Extremely disappointed, luckily we hadn't ordered anything else so we went to another restaurant. False advertisement that cost us 23 euros. We then discovered this place was noted 3.6 -...
Read moreI spend a good portion of each year here in Villefranche. My favorite lunch stop is Les Palmiers where I know I will get decent food, friendly service, and a seat from which I can enjoy the life of this wonderful village. Let's face it. Most of the menus in this area read much the same. What sets certain bistros apart is who goes there. Everyone I know has a favorite place. I love it that many French families choose this cafe for their Sunday lunch. I love watching them. If you are mainly about food, the pizzas here are truly excellent. Thin crusts, fresh ingredients. If you like seafood, the Fruit de Mer pizza is a treat. The penne arrabiatta is also very good. If you order the hamburger maison, be sure to insist on medium, not well done. Well-done is like a briquette. The moules are very, very tasty. The rose by the pichet is probably the best rose wine I have had on the Cote d'Azur. Please eat slowly and take in the scene. It may stay with you for the rest of your...
Read moreVery nice restaurant on the coast. A great place to just sit and drink coffee or eat something. The service was very friendly and fast. I ordered octopus salad and it was really good. It wasn't overly seasoned (which I liked because I could season it myself) but it was loaded with big, soft octopus chunks. There was more octopus than salad, which is to be honest, great. Octopus was really well made, soft and tasty. It wasn't gummy or chewy at all. Just perfect. I also ordered a lemon tart, which was very tasty, however the meringue was a bit bad (you could feel the sugar crystals which were not dissolved/incorporated in the meringue). My friends ordered pasta with scallops & some other salads, which were also tasty. Creme brulee was their favorite dessert, and we also got a Nutella tiramisu which was a big hit with the kids. All in all it was a great lunch for the price at the Frech Riviera, and I would definitely come back. Nothing groundbreaking, but very decent...
