my father, sister, and myself were in papeete for one night, and we decided to have a meal together. after some google searching, we found this quaint french-ish spot which had rave reviews; one reviewer going so far as to say it was the best restaurant in tahiti!
the decor is quite something - a bit of art deco, new orleans, art nouveau, and some local tahitian vibes thrown in. quite colourful and pleasant.
i was excited to try the ahi tuna poke. my father was set on the crispy half cooked tuna - although none of us was sure if this meant half a tuna, fully cooked, or an entire tuna, cooked to 50%.
sadly, we were never to find out, as the restaurant informed us they were entirely devoid of tuna. this is particularly surprising as just a few meters away is the papeete market, which bristles with quantities of tuna the likes of which i'd never seen.
no matter, a steak frites it was for me, and my father went with the mahi mahi dumplings.
my steak was fine, cooked well and reasonably tasty, but i did not find myself compelled to proclaim this to be the best restaurant in tahiti. to be fair, it was the first one i'd been to.
the wine was quite nice. service was quite pleasant, although perhaps a bit slow - but then that seems to be the tahiti way; dining experiences here are meant to be savoured and not rushed.
i could be compelled to give these guys another shot, but we all walked away feeling slightly...
Read moreWhen we got to the restaurant we weren't allowed to sit inside. They claimed they were cleaning it and it wasn't being cleaned at all. So we had to sit outside among people who were smoking cigarettes, which wasn't ideal when trying to eat. The service was very slow and it took at least 20 minutes for our order to be taken and it wasn't busy. The person who was serving us seemed like he didn't want to be at work and wasn't friendly. I dont know if it was because we dont speak French or what, but he wasn't pleasant. I ordered the Mahi Mahi dumplings, and they left a lot to be desired flavor wise. They were underseasoned or missing something I just can't put my finger on. My husband had a burger and fries, which he did enjoy. The dessert was delicious, and I would eat that every day. I just wish my main course was better. Overall, it was just ok and definitely not the best...
Read moreNice place, nice waiters, nice wine, nice seatings. We had crispy tuna and 3 fish mixed platter and honestly, that was both a bit of a disappointment. The tuna was raw and wrapped in a crispy dough with sushileaves below so the first bite (when I didn't expect the sushi leaves), I was like "ah, this tastes like very old fish". Later saw why it was like that. Well, 3 small pieces of raw tune, wrapped in sushi leaves with some baked dough and a sauce. It wasn't my favourite. My husband had the Pacific fish types "Bourride" (3300 XPF) and he actually got a small plate with lots of sauce, quite a lot of potatoes and very little fish. Not really up to the price to be honest.... Still had a great time and liked the place, just bit disappointed by...
