A Memorable Meal at Au Passage – Our Favorite in Paris!
My boyfriend and I decided to celebrate our 3rd anniversary in Paris, and as a big fan of Anthony Bourdain’s show, I immediately rewatched his Paris episode for inspiration. That’s how I discovered Au Passage. Although the episode is already several years old, I was happy to see that the restaurant is still very popular—and now I understand why!
We were staying in Montmartre, but we made the trip to the Marais especially for this dinner, and it was absolutely worth it. I would say this was the best meal we had during our stay in Paris.
We loved the shared plates concept, which is perfect for couples who enjoy tasting a variety of dishes. We ordered the oysters, yellowfin sashimi, tuna tartare, sweetbread, and mackerel. Each dish was beautifully presented (yes, I took photos of everything!) and absolutely delicious. The bread was also fantastic, and the wine paired perfectly with our meal.
A small note about the service: we arrived about 10 minutes before opening time, and instead of being offered a table or a drink while waiting, we were asked to wait outside. Then, when the restaurant opened, other guests started to walk in, and we had to make our way in as well, even though the waiter knew we were the first to arrive. It also seemed like they were still doing some prep (cutting bread, filling water bottles) right as service was starting. That said, once we ordered, the food arrived fairly quickly—especially the cold dishes, which came out first. There was a small pause before the sweetbread and mackerel arrived, but nothing too long.
The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, and while the staff is friendly, they might benefit from an extra team member to speed things up during busy hours. Some tables near us who arrived later waited about 30 minutes for their first dishes.
Overall, though, we were super happy and will definitely return. The food is amazing, the vibe is cozy, and the prices are very fair for the quality. My tip: arrive early and enjoy the relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere—and one of the best...
Read moreThis was by far the worst experience of dining that I’ve ever had. I live in NYC and eat out often. I never write reviews.
We had an 845 dinner and arrived at 840. We were told that we were wayyyyy too early even though we confirmed our 845 dinner earlier in the day. We then were told to wait wherever but there was no space. We asked for wine while we waited and they did not offer to give us wine for free or anything. We waited 45 minutes before 5 of us were sat at a 4-top and when I asked if we could push another table over or move to a place with more space, we were advised that those tables were reserved for other people (who were not there). We then sat for 15 minutes without any water or any drinks or any service or anything to accommodate our wait. When we got up to leave, saying this is unacceptable they just responded “goodbye”.
I would have loved to try this restaurant because it’s listed everywhere but I don’t enjoy terrible customer service. This restaurant defined terrible customer service and ruined my last night in Paris. I entered dinner loving Paris and left with excitement to head back to the land of customer service. If you value your time and being treated kindly, DO...
Read moreI want to give it higher marks because the dishes were very creative and there was clearly a lot of thought of into their conception, however the execution was lacking and a bit lackluster. When we arrived, we sat down and first noticed that there was no AC. This wasn't an issue at first, but as the restaurant got more crowded, there was a serious issue with heat and air circulation. It was also odd that they had no English menus considering most of the clientele, as far as I could tell, were English speakers. Gave off kind of a pretentious vibe, especially since the menu was 1 small page bound into a small booklet. We ended up ordering the tuna tartar, yellowtail sashimi, fried polenta, octopus, and duck breast. The tuna tartar was OK. A little too much mayonnaise for my taste. The sashimi and polenta dishes were great, but the octopus and duck were very tough. Also the chorizo sauce for the octopus was way too acidic, you couldn't taste the chorizo at all. For the duck, there was a cherry sauce, which was the best part of the dish, but the duck itself kind of felt only lukewarm. We then had to wait maybe 30 min before they brought our check, even though we asked twice. Overall, overpriced for...
