It was not a very authentic afghani food experience. The kabuli pulao was more deconstructed kabuli. If you have had afghan food else where, this will miss the mark. I felt it was more catered to tourist palette than real authentic afghan flavours. If you have never had afghan food, you will write raving reviews.
The establishment is a cute little restaurant and completely family run. If you are looking for a halal option, this is there, but just keep your expectations managed or you will not be disappointed. The location is amazing in the middle of the main city.
I also felt portion size were small for the prices but that might just be me comparing to North American and British serving sizes versus French. I've attached photos of what we ordered for comparison. We ordered mantu and kabuli pulawo.. Mantu was not bad, I couldn't really fault it but the pulao, which was the reason I went to this place just was not kabuli pulao but flavoured rice, topped with boiled (not caramelised carrots), raisins were no where to be found and the meat was served up on the side rather than being mixed and cooked right into the pulao. The menu is limited choices of afghan foods. Chapali kebab was made with chicken and was ok flavour wise, still it was not authentic Chapali.. I cannot believe they don't have bolani though. Their paratha was tasty. But as I said, if you have been in town and only eating vegetarian or seafood, this place offers an opportunity to have halal, but if you are expecting real afghan flavours, you will be disappointed.
The response below from the owner shows the level. I'll definitely never visit again. I mentioned what I felt was the case as I've eaten all over the world. I didn't say it was not good, it just was not what I expected.. I'm sorry that you won't take the criticism for what it is and better your food. No one is doubting your experience and what you serve works in St. Malo, but again I've had much better afghan food at other places in other countries too.. You are a small family based restaurant and I would support because of it but taking my comment as a direct attack and insulting me is not going to help you. Ethnic food in general in France is just not upto par yet simply bcz competition is less... If you have lived in big cities like new York and London and had some of the best ethnic food from all over the world, food in France doesn't compare.
Anyways, i wish you the best sir, but highly disappointed by your way...
Read morethe food was so good i went with my family. it had calming music and the service was great. even though he didn’t speak english, the guy working there tried his best and got all of our orders right. i got the lamb it was a little chewy but my mom gave me the rest of her chicken wrap and it was so good! i definitely recommend. the fries were so good and so was the sauce and the rice. everything was delicious. the lamb had great taste i just can’t eat chewy foods but that’s a personal preference. Read moreWhat a gem! This Afghani restaurant blew me away with its rich, authentic flavors and warm hospitality. We started with Bolani, which was crispy and flavorful, and followed with the Kabuli Pulao—hands down the best I’ve had. The rice was perfectly spiced and the lamb was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The Mantu dumplings were also a hit, topped with a delicious yogurt sauce and lentils. Highly recommend for anyone looking to try something new or enjoy a hearty, comforting meal. I’ll...
