A Scoop of Disappointment – When Ice Cream Isn’t About the Ice Cream
I love ice cream.
I enjoy it here in Germany, around the world, and especially in Italy—where gelato is practically an art form. I’ve reviewed shops, published my thoughts, and made vlogs capturing the joy and flavor of every scoop.
But eating ice cream is not just about taste. It’s about the experience. It’s about laughing with your kids, sharing a cone with your partner, taking selfies with sticky smiles and sweet memories. It’s family. It’s joy.
Unfortunately, what I witnessed at this particular ice cream shop wasn’t a memory I wanted to keep—let alone share.
Let’s start with the ice cream itself. As an aficionado? It was mediocre. Nothing worth gushing over. Certainly not bad, but definitely forgettable.
What truly turned me off, though, was the service.
Now, I understand that some German ice cream shops have rules: if you buy a cone or cup, you’re expected to enjoy it outside—reserving indoor seating for those ordering more elaborate creations in glass dessert bowls. Fair enough. It’s a business, and that’s a common strategy.
But it’s how the employees enforced this rule that left a bad taste in my mouth.
I witnessed several families—parents with young kids—turned away rudely and loudly while trying to sit inside. Some were even trying to order from the menu after buying cones for their kids. Still, they were treated with an unkindness that was, frankly, shocking for a place built around something as joyful as ice cream.
Watching parents explain, almost pleading, that they were planning to order more… seeing children confused about why they were being asked to move… it was uncomfortable and disappointing.
Yes, cones and cups are easy, messy fun—especially for kids. And no, not every customer is perfect. But there’s never a need to embarrass people, especially families just trying to enjoy a treat together.
As someone who creates content around food—and ice cream—I decided not to feature this shop on my blog or in my vlogs. Not because of one mediocre scoop. But because the experience didn’t deserve the spotlight.
Food: Mediocre Ambiance: Unremarkable Service: Embarrassing
Ice cream should bring people together. This place pushed them away.
EDIT:
Thank you for your response. As I mentioned in my review, I was simply a witness to the situation and was sharing what I observed.
If this is the response you’re choosing to provide, I’d like to respectfully suggest that the tone and manner in which your staff interact with customers could be improved. Professional and courteous communication goes a long way.
That said, I stand by my comments regarding the overall experience. Customer service is a vital part of any dining experience, and I hope this feedback is taken...
Read moreI recently visited Eiscafe Venezia and tried their strawberry ice cream. Unfortunately, my experience was quite average. The ice cream itself was okay, but it didn't stand out in terms of flavor or texture. The ambiance of the cafe is pleasant, with outdoor seating that's perfect for a sunny day. However, the quality of the ice cream could definitely be improved. If you're in the area, it's an alright spot to relax, but don't expect anything extraordinary from...
