I live in San Francisco where I am spoiled with a wide selection of Thai restaurants. Sticky rice with mango is the only dessert that has to be part of my meal. In any other choice of restaurant, I would avoid that sugary finish. Sticky rice with mango is almost the main dish for me. It is a heavenly combination of sticky rice, coconut milk, toasted sesame, and one half of a sliced up mango. Today, I found Sawaddie on Berlin's main stretch of Vietnamese and Thai restaurants, Kantstraße. The place is very cozy due to its location at the street corner and some outdoor seating at the side street. The restaurant is family owned and managed. Today I asked for a double-baked beef dish and, of course, my sticky rice. I was very much looking forward to it. Once the moment arrived, the waitress told me that they were out of mango. You can only imagine my disappointment. Then the owner's daughter arrived and explained to me the entire mango logistics. I already knew that mangos are seasonal, and everything she explained made sense. Then I mebtio to her that the sticky rice is more important to me than the mango, which could easily be replaced by another fruit, such as pineapple. Hence, she offered me to prepare a sticky rice with pineapple. My happiness was restored while I enjoyed our new creation. I loved the personal service and attention. Definitely worth visiting this restaurant if you have a craving for Thai food, and, of course, sticky...
Read moreIf you have any moderate expectations when it comes to Thai food then don't come here. It's not really a restaurant, more of a budget eatery selling Thai based food. It had many good reviews so we decided to give it a chance. I wish we hadn't. It ruined my evening. The service was not friendly but not unfriendly, they seemed to have other things to do although there were only 2 other guests as we we there at 6pm. ( I now realise why). The restaurant inside was OK, not large , but very draughty. The food was..... Budget is probably the right word. The meat was disgusting. Processed something. I couldn't eat it. The chicken in my soup squeaked on my teeth. The beef in my main course was only slightly darker in colour than the squeaky chicken and did not resemble beef. I couldn't eat it either, which left me hungry as there was a serious lack of vegetables in my dish. It just wasn't Thai. I really don't like giving bad reviews but if this review saves someone a bad experience then it has served it's purpose. I've been to 2 really good Thai restaurants on previous visits to Berlin. One is just down the road and definitely worth a visit. You get what you pay for. The other on...
Read moreI once visited this place pre-COVID. It was cold and I wanted something warm so I had the tom yam soup here. It was pretty good, kinda wished the portion was bigger.
I'm giving it 5 stars because when I lost my hotel key (which I dropped here without realizing), the lady in charge of the shop held it for me. She immediately recognized me as soon as I stepped back into the shop a couple of hours later and promptly showed me the key. As a person who isn't a familiar with Berlin at the time, I was super thankful. Lady, I don't know who you are but thank you very much...
