Wen's Küche — Restaurant in Berlin

TLDR; Eat here if you have loads of time and patience, if you are not very hungry (yet) and only(!) if you get a table outside.

The Chinese food is good. I really enjoyed the starters, crunchy cucumber and Wan Tan in chili oil. The crispy fried eggplants were too sweet, the green beans were slightly too hard but tasty, Mapo Tofu was good.

Now about service and atmosphere. I spent my evening sweating, coughing and sneezing for three hours. Why?

Firstly: Dear owners, please install a suitable divider between dining area and kitchen, the curtain is not enough. The heat was bad. That single fan in the corner was overwhelmed. It still dutifully distributed all chili infused fumes from the kitchen which kept tickling and burning in our lungs and eyes all evening. Notice how your guests have coughing fits every couple of minutes?

Secondly: Get organised! Most importantly: Prioritize your restaurant guests over delivery! We waited for two hours(!) until the last main dish arrived. You only have seven tables overall. Two other parties arrived after us but got their food first. How?

The kitchen was very busy, we heard cooking sounds all the time but did not see much food being carried out to the guests. So I assume: Delivery. If you cannot handle that many customers, just reduce the number of tables inside or restrict the number of deliveries.

You ladies from the service were very sweet and friendly, once you noticed us. You work very hard and you do your best to calm down upset customers. The second star is for you.

If you realize that you messed up a lot, why not apologize by including one of the drinks on the house?

Best Chinese restaurant in Berlin! (Cantonese) I have been here for more than 10 times, with different international friends, even if it is so far away from my place. But it is worthy!

As a Chinese, I can definitely say it is the MOST authentic Chinese food in Berlin !

A tip for foreigners, China is huge, we have various taste among China. For this restaurant, it is from the South of China, really authentic! And what the importance is, the food quality is really good! and it is not expensive! For Chinese food, we usually share, so bring some friends with you, you can order more food, and it is really worthy!

What I order for my international friends: Eggplant 鱼香茄子( my international friends are surprised with it, must try) Shrimp 椒盐大虾( my international friends are surprised with it, must try) Sour soup beef 酸汤肥牛( that is my personal favorite, a bit sour, a bit spicy) Dongpo Pork 东坡肉 ( this is quite transitional food , some people may feel greasy, but it is a special food from China) Fries Beans 干煸豆角 ( transitional Chinese way to cook vegetables, must try) Steamed Fish 青蒸鱼 ( I like it, that is the taste from my hometown. But I feel international friends they don’t like this a lot, because they prefer something with strong taste more. For Chinese from south area, that is a good dish) Healthy tea 养生茶( a Chinese tea with dates/flowers/….too much stuff inside the tea, recommend to try, that is my favorite, reminds me the school time. For international friends, they also like to order Ice...

Ich gehe im Schnitt 3 - 4 x pro Woche essen und habe im Laufe der Jahrzehnte einen sehr großen Erfahrungsschatz im In- und Ausland sammeln können. Leider kann ich deshalb die vielen positiven Bewertungen des „New Ocean“ an dieser Stelle absolut nicht nachvollziehen.

Das Lokal: Es handelt sich beim „New Ocean“ mit seinen 5 Tischen eher um einen Chinesischen Imbiss, als um ein Restaurant. Bei immerhin 7° Außentemperatur war es mir im Lokal trotz eines dicken Pullovers sehr kalt. Kunststück, die Heizkörper waren ausgeschaltet. Dafür roch nach einem ca. halbstündigen Aufenthalt meine komplette Kleidung unangenehm nach den Kochschwaden die durchs Lokal zogen, weil offensichtlich das Abluftsystem nicht richtig funktionierte, oder aber die Wartung überfällig war. Habe zuhause meine gesamte Kleidung in die Waschmaschine gegeben. Es gibt Chinesische Restaurants, die bei der Ausstattung und Einrichtung keine Kosten und Mühe gescheut haben, hier kann man jedoch nichts davon erkennen - einfachste Ausstattung ohne irgendeinen Blickfang, dazu ein leichter Renovierungsstau.

Service: Um zu bestellen sollte ich die Nummern aus der Karte auf einen Block schreiben. Zugegeben: Die deutschen Zahlen sind sicher nicht leicht zu lernen, trotzdem verstehe ich darunter nicht den Service, den andere Gäste hier so hoch bewertet haben. Dafür war mein Essen nach 5 Minuten am Tisch, das Essen meines Freundes kam dann ein paar Minuten später; ob das ein gutes Zeichen ist? Wohl eher nicht! Zu unseren Getränken aus der Flasche wurde nicht einmal ein Glas gereicht.

Essen: Die von meinem Freund und mir bestellten Essen gibt es in fast allen Chinesischen Restaurants unter dem gleichen Namen, allerdings empfanden wir beide die Interpretation des „New Ocean“ als weniger gelungen, unserer Meinung nach im unteren Drittel des Rankings. Bei mir hat die Sauce den Eigengeschmack des Hühnerfleisches völlig erschlagen und war viel zu salzig, dafür gab es beim Gericht meines Freundes überhaupt keine Sauce, nur panierte und frittierte Hühnerteile mit einer gehackten Lauchzwiebel, etwas frischem Chili, sowie getrockneter Knoblauch und Szechuanpfeffer. Dazu wurde völlig verkochter, klebriger Reis gereicht.
